Most of the Gray Whales when in the Lagoons in México are curious, a lot of them are friendly and approach the boats as if they were looking human contact. And when you find a friendly whale, it becomes a magical experience…

After a somewhat crazy wild ride through the sandy desert, near marshes and salt flats, we arrived to the departure point for our first whale watching excursion. The lagoon was a little rough but there were a good number of whales, lots of them spy-hopping, and in several occasions, groups of three would get near our pangas. Tomorrow we will go out again.

Good morning! Another brave group is joining me on a great tour: Whale Watching Express, where we go in search of one of the greatest experiences which is seeing up and close the East Pacific Gray Whale and their calves. Stay tuned for pictures and comments. And if you are flexible with your plans and would like to join in one of these tours too, I am starting to sign up people for early February 2026… small group, seats go fast.

As you may have noticed, we just returned from a tour to Guadalajara and San Miguel de Allende. So many memories! Guadalajara was Mark’s favorite city, we visited even when not in a tour. He fell and broke his wrist in Ajijic in one of the tours 🥴. This time in San Miguel, there was something which Mark would have been all over it: in one corner near El Jardín square a guy set up a big telescope and was offering people to take a look at the rings of Saturn. It had some of Mark’s elements: love for Astronomy and entrepreneurship. It could have been him doing it 🥹. Sam, a dear friend of us, sent me the picture accompanying this post, I loved it.

Back home and now I am up before the sun. Long travel day yesterday! Got here before midnight and was welcomed by four four-legged creatures and Eduardo, who takes great care of them while I am traveling.

We go back home today. The last day of the tour was free for the group to rest if they needed to, and self explore San Miguel de Allende. Some had made some researching and had already places in mind they wanted to go and see. Lots of Mexican history, art, food, crafts, shopping, narrow, cobblestones streets to wander. Looking forward to hearing their stories and discoveries.

We had a full day. First we visited Atotonilco, a World Heritage Site featuring a small sanctuary with murals depicting scenes from the Bible; continued to Dolores Hidalgo, town where the Independence movement started, and then Guanajuato City, the state capital with a lively historic downtown district.

After a few long hours on the road, everybody behaved I must say, we got to our destination, San Miguel de Allende. We kind of needed a break from the van so the group had a free night to do as they please. A night walk was in my very near future.
