The refuges located in the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve have allowed the care and preservation of the species, since its temperate waters are ideal for reproduction, and protection policies in Mexico guarantee the safety of cetaceans during their stay in our country.
The surveillance and protection work carried out by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), in conjunction with government institutions and civil society organizations, has managed to recover the population of one of the largest species in the marine world, which is found in the protection category according to the Official Mexican Standard 059-SEMARNAT 2010.
Due to poaching, this species was reduced to two thousand specimens in the first decades of the 20th century.
On January 14, 1972, in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the waters of the Ojo de Liebre-Guerrero Negro Lagoon area, south of Sebastián Vizcaíno Bay, on the Pacific Ocean coast, in the state of Baja California South.
