Akumal, with its beautiful bay, its white sand beach, its sea turtles and countless underwater wonders, is the perfect destination to relax and enjoy the Mexican Caribbean. Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulúm, 96 kilometers south of Cancun, Akumal is the oldest tourist destination in the entire Riviera Maya long before Cancun was even thought of by the Mexican government as an international tourist destination and that Quintana Roo was named a federal state. In 1974, a diver in search of a sunken Spanish galleon discovered the earthly paradise that is Akumal. This diver was Don Pablo Bush Romero, a founding member of the CEDAM (Exploration and Water Sports Club of Mexico), which was mainly dedicated to discover wrecks and underwater treasures.
Akumal at that time was a huge plantation of coconut trees and Don Pablo fell in love with his discovery instantly, so he wanted to share it with the world. Then, he bought the whole place, moved to live there and began to develop Akumal as the first tourist destination in the Mexican Caribbean. The first houses and buildings were built by bringing all the materials by boat from Cozumel, because at that time there was no road that reached the bay. Sixty years later, this site remains as one of the most beautiful and best preserved places in the entire Mexican Caribbean. With its small hotels and just a handful of restaurants and shops, Akumal is the perfect place to enjoy the sea, sunbathe calmly and relax without being interrupted by large numbers of people or by smugglers, which is increasingly harder to find in popular destinations
