DRIVING A GOLF CART ON ISLA MUJERES:

Here are many things that the rental companies do not tell you:

ONE-WAY STREETS: In Centro, with the exception of Ave Rueda Medina (main street in front of the ferry with divided traffic going both directions)... all other streets in Centro are one-way going North. So the only road in Centro to go to the SOUTH is the one in front of the ferry/Navy base/Playa Centro.

East to West streets are all one-way direction (look for signs showing no turn into one-way street).

Hidalgo is pedestrian only street, but the cross streets are open to traffic (look both ways before crossing).

BE CAREFUL TO NOT BE GOING DOWN THE ONE-WAY STREETS THE WRONG DIRECTION AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

STAY TO THE RIGHT: All golf carts are to stay as far to the right as possible so that Taxi’s and faster traffic can pass. Do not stop in the middle of the road… pull to the side. Check your blind spot before moving over. Check carefully behind you before left turns (use arm signal you are going to turn).

The only exception is on the road in front of the ferry... Golf Carts stay as far to the LEFT as possible and scooters will pass on the right. That is only on this street that you drive to the left. All other streets stay as far to the right as possible.

If a moto/scooter t***s their horn at you, they are just letting you know that they are going to pass you on your left side. This is because they do not want to get hit by weaving golf carts due to people looking at their cell phones or intoxicated drivers. Please do not cuss them out or shoot birds at them... they are just trying to get your attention to keep them safe.

PEDESTRIANS, ETC.: Pedestrians have the right of way. Stop and let them cross. Traffic police on Medina. Also watch for iguanas, huge crabs, dogs and cats.

HAND SIGNALS: Use hand signals before turning (no turn signals on carts). DO NOT U-TURN IN TRAFFIC (too many golf carts are hitting scooters and hurting people)

BEACH & MALECON: No driving golf carts on any of the beaches allowed!!!

No driving on the Malecon (wide sidewalk on the Caribbean side in Centro and La Gloria).

PARKING: Red curb = No parking. Yellow curb = Drop off and pick-up only. White curb = Can parallel park there. Slash thru an E or P = No parking. If you park your golf cart or moto in a no parking zone, they will remove the plates and tow it away.

If you stop at the ferry bank or other bank, have one person stay on the golf cart while the other runs in to exchange money - Do not leave it unattended or it will be towed away. Best parking in Centro is at the Isla Mujeres sign by the Malecon.

In Centro: Do not double park golf carts (block traffic) or it will be towed and removed. Also park horizontal to the curve. If you pull in anywhere on the island and leave the back of the golf cart sticking out in the road, your golf cart may be towed away.

At times the police will just remove your golf cart tag for illegal parking and you will have to pay a hefty fine when you turn the golf cart back in.

DRIVER: The driver must have a valid driver’s license (NO CHILDREN ALLOWED TO DRIVE- If a child drives and causes an accident – parent and child will go to the police station and parents are liable and will possibly be arrested).

PASSENGERS: Only four people allowed on Regular Golf Carts (except for small children). Police will stop you for more than four. Do not overweight golf carts, as many leaning ones end up flipping.

ALCOHOL: No driving intoxicated or even slightly inebriated. No open alcoholic beverages on the golf cart (driver or passengers). Isla police are checking and giving tickets (jail if consume alcohol and cause an accident)… breathalyzer use 0 tolerance (or sometimes they have you blow into their hands to smell for alcohol).

TOPES: There are speed bumps (topes) EVERYWHERE. Watch the road and signs. Slow down to go over them (or you may bump your passengers off).

Secure or take off hats while driving/riding on the Caribbean side of the island. The wind is very strong and I see golf carts stopping here all day long and people running back down the road to retrieve hats. This becomes a road hazard of stalled golf carts getting hit or people running down the middle of the road getting hit.

ACCIDENT: If you have an accident, you will be liable for all damage. So drive carefully – Slow down for turns!

ITEMS ON CART: Do not go off and leave items on the golf cart, or they will probably not be there when you get back. Lock your cart when you park.
