Site created by the hand of man with the purpose of commercially connecting the Maya of the North with the Maya of Central America.

Thanks to this, a great commercial exchange was achieved, in which, the main products were food, exotic bird feathers and of course, precious woods, which have been the greatest wealth of the area since several centuries ago.

Later, during the colony, this was called the Salamanca Canal, which served as a connection point between Europe and America, being the focus of attention for famous pirates and privateers among which Henry Morgan (1635 - 1688), Francis Drake (1543 - 1596), among others, which took advantage of this commercial point to exploit the wood wealth for repair of their boats and construction of new ships.

Currently, this is an almost obligatory visit point in Bacalar, due to its beauty and also for its high mineral content, ideal for exfoliating the skin.

Mayan culture refers to a Mesoamerican civilization that stood out over more than two millennia in numerous sociocultural aspects such as its hieroglyphic writing, one of the few fully developed writing systems of the pre-Columbian American continent, its art, architecture and its notables numbering systems, as well as astronomy, mathematics and understanding of ecology. It was developed in Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, also in Belize, the western part of Honduras and in El Salvador.

In pre-Hispanic times the Maya used chewing gum to clean their mouths before celebrating a religious ceremony, and it was also useful to quench their thirst when water was scarce. Of course, that Mayan gum was of natural origin, because the bark of the Chicozapote tree is obtained.

Fortunately, there are indigenous families that continue to live from the chiclero trade today, and in fact, the export of this 100% Mexican product is a reason of pride for local producers who, in addition to everything, pay attention to the care of the environment.

A HISTORY OF GOOD AND EVIL

THE LEGEND OF KINICH AND TIZIC

One of the things that make the Yucatan Peninsula magical is its legends and stories, stories that are thousands of years old and have passed from generation to generation. Like the Mayan legend of Chechén and Chacá. It is said that for every Chechén tree, you can always find a Chacá tree by its side. You want to know why? Read on and discover the legend of how two warrior princes ended up transformed into these two trees for all eternity.

Kinich and Tizic were two brave warrior warriors, but of opposite personalities. Kinich was a kind, kind and respected young man for his people. On the other hand, his older brother Tizic was a person with a cold heart and an angry character.

One day they both met Nicté Há, a beautiful young woman with a pure heart who conquered these warriors. The two brothers fell madly in love with the same woman. So Tizic challenged Kinich to a duel for the love of the beautiful maiden.

The gods were so angry to see this situation, that they covered the sky with black clouds and even the moon was hidden throughout the battle. Unfortunately, the duel had a tragic end and both brothers ended up dead in each other's arms.

Upon reaching the other world, they begged the forgiveness of the gods, both begging to see their beloved Nicte Ha again. That was how Tizic was reborn as a Chechen tree, which would secrete poison inside its branches and burn anyone who approaches. Kinich instead was reborn in the form of a Chacah tree. Whose sap would cure all the toxic of Chechén.

Nicté Há died of sadness when he learned of the tragic history of the warrior brothers. Upon reaching the other world, the gods were kind to her. Allowing him to be reborn on earth as a beautiful white flower near the water, better known as a lily.
