Chacchobben means "The Place of the Red Corn" in traditional ancient Mayan language. The beautiful Mayan Ruins are surrounded by lush vegetation which hide the ruins and were discovered by American archaeologist Peter Harrison, who reported the site to Mexican authorities in 1972. Before this date, only the locals knew of the existence of those ruins. The excavation of the site began in 1994 by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Chacchoben. The archaeological site opened to the public in 2002. The Chacchoben Ruins offer a truly authentic experience of the Mayas and their culture, situated in the middle of a beautiful jungle setting where nature and history seem to become one. After the ruins tour in Chacchoben the excursion continues to the Bacalar Lagoon about 15 minutes minutes away.
