In February 2006, Onca Explorations performed the first citizen science platform in Mazatlan waters aimed to obtain sightings and photoidentification records of cetaceans, particularly humpback whales and other marine mega fauna. Through the documentation of whale and dolphin sightings during our expeditions we aim to educate the public about marine ecology, and the value of biodiversity and the t
hreats it face, while creating a significant base of knowledge through citizen science in order to better understand the ecology and conservation needs of the cetacean community inhabiting the coastal waters of Mazatlán and southern Sinaloa. Our team is particularly interested in understanding trends in distribution, abundance and habitat use by cetaceans and other marine mega fauna in the area, and to assess its management and conservation needs. Throughout an area of over 800 square kilometres on the continental platform of southern Sinaloa, we have performed over 1,300 cetacean surveys funded mainly by tourists and the general public: a bit over 10,000 participants to be precise! During over 5,000 hours at sea we have surveyed 36,000 linear nautical miles – that is like circling the globe around the equator 1.5 times!- and documented over 3,000 marine wildlife sightings, including up to up to 19 species of marine mammals, and a little bit over 2,700 hours observing and documenting these amazing animals. Our citizen science expeditions offer the opportunity for everyone to live a unique experience in nature while taking part in real wildlife monitoring programs along a team of specialists who will guide your adventure and share their knowledge on species observed, its habitat, the techniques used in their study, and the importance of managing and conserving their populations. Today´s sighting was quite unique and amazing! We can say that these were the most loveable and friendly pair of humpbacks we have ever met! Super mellow, curious, strong and confident! You can see they are simply happy to be here and among us 🥰 It is important to mention that the boat was completely still when the whales decided to approach us and by following the regulations and best practices of NOM-131 we were able to enjoy one of the best encounters ever! A reminder that you do not need to break the rules to have great closeness to whales....you just need to be patient, respectful, and know what the crap you are doing ;) Make sure you book with authorized and certified operators, not only that! make sure you go out with people who care about the whales, who know the whales and who make efforts to protect them.

Un nuevo artículo científico ha sido publicado en la reconocida revista Marine Mammal Science sobre una especie de odontoceto sumamente carismática: la Orca falsa (Pseudorca crassidens).
Esta investigación esta liderada por aspirante a maestra en ciencias Camila Lazcano del Centro Universitario de la Costa de la Universidad de Guadalajara en colaboración con muchas instituciones e investigadores de México y Estados Unidos, incluyendo a nuestro fundador, el maestro en ciencias Oscar Guzón
Onca Exploraciones colaboró con datos de avistamientos y fotografias de esta especie en aguas Mazatlecas con resultados muy interesantes sobre su ecología y movimientos en aguas del Océano Pacífico Oriental, desde México hasta California. De hecho uno de los individuos fotografiados en Mazatlán, fue también fotografiado en Oaxaca, lo cual sugiere que esta población mantiene ambitos hogareños muy amplios de más de 1,500 km!
Felicidades Camila y colaboradores! Esto demuestra que cuando se trata de estudiar especies altamente moviles y longevas lo que funciona son los programas de monitoreo a largo plazo, pero sobre todo, la voluntad y colaboración entre individuos e instuticiones.
Esperamos juntos poder seguir contribuyendo al conocimiento de los cetáceos en el Pacífico Mexicano y así poder garantizar su protección y conservación 🐬💙

Over the course of more than six decades, Roger inspired students, scientists and citizens around the world with his work on the vocalizations of whales, showing us the depth and sophistication of their emotional lives. In doing so, Roger helped jump-start the modern environmental movement. By making people care about whales, he made them care about the planet.
Roger was a generous, charismatic figure, willing to share his wonder and enthusiasm for the natural world. How very fortunate we were to have him as our founder and President — and we will continue to do our best to honor his legacy.

¿DONDE? En la Playa de Isla Venados.
Si te interesa participar tendrás que llegar por tu cuenta. Muchos cruzan en Kayak o Paddle board propio o rentado.
Nuestros aliados de Aqua Adventures estaran ofreciendo a mitad de precio el servicio de cruce a la isla: $120 pesos por persona desde la playa del Hotel Royal Villas. Tambien tendrán a la renta equipos de snorkel completos por $120 pesos más 😎👌

|| Familia de vendedores ambulantes celebraron el cumpleaños a su hijo en plena vía publica, el niño se encuentra muy feliz y solo dice gracias.
La familia de escasos recursos comparte un pequeño pudín en plena vía pública y se aprecia la inmensa alegría en el rostro del niño. Aveces la felicidad no está en el dinero.
Esta fotografía muestra a una pequeña familia de vendedores ambulantes, quienes tienen escasos recursos, pero no dejan que eso les impida celebrar el cumpleaños de su hijo; ellos en medio de la vía pública comparten un pequeño pudín y se puede apreciar la alegría inmensa en el rostro del niño.
Por otro lado hay otros niños que no aprecian el esfuerzo de su papá y parecen nunca estar satisfechos.
Aveces solo debemos tener y enseñar a los niños la importancia de la gratitud, empatía y valorar las pequeñas cosas de la vida, todo tiene un valor. La verdadera felicidad no está en lo material si no en los momentos simples y agradables de la vida.

Aunque es un curso básico, está diseñado para aquellas personas con afinidad acuática que desean sumergirse en el mundo del buceo libre recreativo, con el particular interés de entrar en contacto con la vida marina. El curso aporta los elementos necesarios para hacerte sentir cómodo y relajado bajo el agua, para que puedas divertirte, haciendo uso de una respiración correcta y conteniendo la misma de forma segura. También aprenderás aspectos básicos sobre la ecología y el comportamiento de especies de megafauna marina que puedes encontrar en el Pacífico mexicano y Golfo de California, así como las mejores prácticas para interactuar con ellas en libertad. Este curso no es una certificación, pero sin duda te ayudará a decidirte por una, si esto es lo tuyo. What people are saying about us... GO FOR IT!! Definitely a highlight of our week in Mazatlán. Communication was excellent throughout the booking process. Oscar was our guide and it's evident how passionate he is about marine research. He is extremely well educated in these topics and his passion was contagious. We saw a massive pod of about 50 dolphins! Then, we made a quick haul about 4 miles offshore and found a pod of 6 whales! It was so spectacular to see them up so close! The rough boat ride (it was quite windy that day) was totally worth it. We stayed with them for some time and I never got the sense that Oscar and the other gentleman on the boat with him were just trying to check off a box and get back to the marina. Super, super cool. I loved being in the bow of the boat, although the smaller boat experience may not be for those who get seasick easily, especially if the water is rough that day. So just know that going in. What people are saying about us... Our guide Oscar Guzón did a great job organizing this trip and accompanied us during the tour. The local guide Don Santos Vazquez was able to find all of the birds (including the Tufted Jays) that we wanted to see and more. The cabin is rustic but comfortable and quiet. We were happy to meet Don Santos' family at their home in El Palmito where his wife prepared and served us our meals. Overall recommended for those who would like to make the trip to see the Tufted Jays while lettings others take care of the logistics, while also supporting the people and community that are working to protect this vital habitat.
