Founded in 2010, Eat Mexico is the first tourism company in Mexico City to offer tours of the city’s street food and markets. Customers can choose from six routes: Street Food, Regional Tacos, Markets, Sunday Tianguis, A Journey Through La Merced, and Late Night Tacos and Mezcal. Most tours run about 4 hours long, and they’re designed for small groups of 1 to 6 people. Eat Mexico’s goal is to teac

h customers what most people in Mexico City and Puebla really eat. Our customers taste freshly prepared foods from stands and fondas across Mexico City — and they learn about how each item is prepared, its history, and its importance and role in local culture. By the end of our tours, our clients are full and happy, and they’ve learned something they can share with their friends back home. Eat Mexico has served hundreds of tourists from all over the world. We’re also on Facebook, Twitter and Trip Advisor. The business was founded in July 2010 by Lesley Téllez, an American expat based in Mexico City, and Jesica López Sol, a chilanga who moved to Mexico City when she was nine years old. Lesley is currently Eat Mexico’s sole owner and executive director.

Tacos in Mexico are more than just a dish; they are a way of eating. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, tacos will almost always be our first choice.

Clara Hernández, one of our culinary expert guides, shares some interesting facts about tortillas, salsas and toppings in this new entry.

When thinking about Mexico, it is almost inevitable to associate it with the word TACOS. For Mexicans, it is something that is basically part of our DNA. Since we were children, the rolled tortilla (the most basic of tacos) is one of the first solid foods we try. Unlike other countries, tacos in Mex...

Puebla is well known for its food, especially mole, but also for its traditional candy. This is a “Tortita de Santa Clara”, a cookie with a pumpkin seed glaze. It originated in the convent of Santa Clara during the colonial period. Traditional Mexican candy generally has seeds or fruits and is sweetened with real sugar cane. The production is still artisanal in family workshops.

Come and learn more about Puebla’s food during our Taste of Puebla tour and our Cooking Class in Puebla which are available daily.

A “sope” can be described as a very big and thick tortilla that was fried in lard or oil. It can be eaten as breakfast, lunch or a snack between meals. A “sope” has beans, fresh cheese and eggs or chicken … the only thing that can make it even better is some freshly made salsa.

During our mezcal tasting, our clients often ask us what is the difference between mezcal and tequila?
Actually there are many, but we can start by pointing out that one of the main ones is the origin. Tequila can be produced in 5 states of Mexico: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Michoacán and Tamaulipas. There can be only one kind of agave in tequila, called Tequilana Weber. Mezcal can be produced in 11 states, Oaxaca being the most famous. When producing mezcal, some of the most popular types of agaves are: Espadín, Cuishe and Tobalá.

Come and learn more about these spirits during our tour Narvate At Night: Tacos, Chelas & Mezcal available from Tuesday through Saturday at 7:00 or 7:30 pm.

Corn dough is of great importance in the Mexican diet, we can use it as a base for tamales, tortillas and tostadas to then add other ingredients. However, none of this would be possible without one of the most important cooking methods in Mexican cuisine, nixtamalization.

Take for example this squash blossom quesadilla, which with just a few ingredients manages to create a very pleasant experience. The freshness of the cheese and squash blossom are complemented by a hand-made tortilla. The final touch is the spicy salsa that everyone can add to taste. This is why to know the best authentic Mexican cuisine you must venture to its markets. Let us guide you through your culinary journey to our best selection of food.

At the Tortilla Class & Worksop you will start by listening to a short, engaging lecture on why Mexican corn matters and how heirloom corn strains are disappearing. From there you’ll learn about the process of nixtamal, an essential part of transforming corn into tortillas, and you’ll grind your own heirloom corn on the metate, an ancestral Mexican volcanic-rock grinding stone. Then you will make your own tortilla, cook it fresh on the comal, and transform it into a delicious quesadilla. To top your quesadilla, you will make your own salsa using a molcajete.

At Eat Mexico we have carefully designed this experience because we think it is a very relevant topic to share. Generally, the tortillas that are sold in most places lack the quality and nutritional content of ancient, handmade tortillas. We believe it is crucial that people all around the world understand the importance of the Nixtamal process and how to look for high quality elaboration, since this has an important impact on the tortilla´s nutritional value.

Our Story

In a city of 22 million, where do most locals eat?

In Mexico City, it’s the street stands. The market stalls. The small, homestyle restaurants known as fondas.

Since 2010, Eat Mexico has shared the unique flavors that fuel millions of Mexicans on a daily basis with travelers all over the globe. Our unique, small-group tours combine both food and history, sharing not only delicious traditional dishes, but the chance to understand what makes them so special—the people who cook them, their neighborhoods, their daily rituals.

On each tour, we visit street stands, markets and fondas that have been personally selected by our founder, cookbook author and journalist Lesley Téllez, and our local Mexico City-based guides. We choose our stops based on the outstanding quality of the food and each item’s importance in the Mexican culinary canon. We don’t take kickbacks or coupons from our vendors.
