Narvarte neighborhood is a taco heaven.

First proof: Tacos Joven, serving tacos de canasta since 1971 from their cozy location on Av. Universidad, hidden among multiple taquerias.

Look for the incredibly big basket and the bucket of red salsa with pork crackling bits.

Aguacate Criollo: 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢 𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘳 𝘥𝘳𝘺𝘮𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢.

This variety has a thin skin completely edible and with a flavor similar to anise and the flesh is creamy, buttery and a bit watery.

This avocado is in season right now so go to any market in mexico and give it a try 🥑

Huitlacoche is a plant disease caused by the pathogenic fungus 𝓤𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓵𝓪𝓰𝓸 𝓶𝓪𝔂𝓭𝓲𝓼 that causes s**t on maize and teosintle.

The fungus forms galls on all above-ground parts of corn species. It is edible, and is known in Mexico as huitlacoche or cuitlacoche.

Eaten, usually as a filling, in quesadillas and other tortilla-based foods, and in soups.

You may also call it Mexican truffle, which sounds waaaay better.

Mamey: 𝘗𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘢

Fruit native to Mexico and Central America, also cultivated in the Caribbean.

Might look like papaya but the taste is closer to a baked sweet potato.

It’s commonly found in smoothies and ice cream.

The pit, also known as pixtle has a fresh almond taste and it’s used in some Mexican traditional dishes and drinks such as tejate from Oaxaca and pixtamales from Puebla.

Aside from the Groundhog Day, February 2nd marks Candelaria or Candlemass Day and it Mexico that basically means tamales and baby Jesus are in order.

It all has to do with whomever was that found the hidden plastic baby Jesus in the Rosca de Reyes back in January 6th. That lucky person is in charge of either giving baby Jesus a full makeover or buying tamales for everyone and in some cases both.

Take a look at my stories to see how La Merced looked like this morning, head to Lydia’s amazing blog to learn more about Candelaria or click on the link in my profile to read about some of the amazing tamales we have throughout the country 🫔🫔🫔
