MEZCALA I SU ISLA DEL PRESIDIO, in the beautiful Lake Chapala.

To all the people of Guadalajara and visitors from the Republic or abroad, we tell you about a not very frequented walk, which is quite close and is worth going to visit for its history!

This is the town of Mezcala and its island “Del Presidio”.
The island of Mezcala is a very beautiful place, full of history and that should be considered truly monumental. Few people expect to see something like this before arriving at such a special place. Perhaps many thought it was something similar to the well-known Isla de los Alacranes.

but in reality it is like an open-air museum where you can see vestiges of our Independence movement and the Mexican Revolution.

They tell us that when it was founded around 1300, it was a Center of Worship for some of the civilizations of Jal.

Father Marcos Castellanos and Encarnación Rosas in 1812, along with other indigenous rebels, ignored the Government of José de la Cruz, who served as “Viceroyal Governor of the Nva. Galicia”, and they began an Independence movement that, out of sympathy, would join Cura Hidalgo's movement. This uprising was fortified on the Island of Mezcala, which resisted the harsh attacks of the “Royalists” for four years from 1812 to 1816.

At the end of the fight in 1817, De la Cruz officially founded the “Presidio.”
Said “Presidio” operated from 1819 to 1855 for the towns near the Lake, both in Jalisco and Michoacán, where most of the criminals arrived, accused mainly of crimes of r**e.
