If you walk in the back of the Santo Domingo monastery, now the Ethnobotanical Garden of Santo Domingo, you can notice that the neighborhood is quite new. Similarly to this map in this códice, this neighborhood was divided into lots that belong to the merchant class. The architecture seems to date to the 17th C. The houses were one floor and were formed in a typical square, the rooms located along the square and a large center courtyard with a fountain, source of their water for the servants, and there was a path from the main entrance where the house-drawn carriage lead to the back garden where the stable housed the horses and cows, and small vegetable and fruit trees horticulture was tended for the self-sustained family. The kitchen was always kept in the back of the squared construction to have easy access to the animals and vegetable garden and the formal rooms, like the dining rooms and bedrooms faced the central courtyard and the living room and parlor faces the street. Although we think this architectural style was a Spanish inheritance, pre-Columbian architecture was also styled in this fashion.
The lots were divided later on, and the new (19th and 20thC) neighborhood was built.

Códice Mixteco post-cortesiano no. 36

Mide: Ancho 84 cm. Alto 82.5 cm.
Acervo de la Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Dr. Eusebio Dávalos Hurtado.
