Each of our apartments was named after a famous woman who lives/lived in Oaxaca. Here's a short biography of Soledad:

Our Lady of Solitude, patroness of Oaxaca, has its origins in a legend from 1617. A lost shipment from Guatemala, transported by mules, ended up in Oaxaca when one mule strayed off course. Upon opening the box, they found an image of Christ, a head and hands of a virgin, with a label that read: “Our Lady of Solitude at the foot of the Cross.” The bishop ordered the construction of a sanctuary, which began in 1682 and was completed in 1689, with the façade finished in 1718.

Inside the Basilica, the image of the Virgin stands out, crowned with 2 kg of gold, over 600 diamonds, and pearls.

Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, patrona de Oaxaca, tiene su origen en una leyenda de 1617. Un cargamento perdido de Guatemala, transportado por mulas, terminó en Oaxaca cuando una mula se desvió. Al abrir la caja, se encontró una imagen de Cristo y una cabeza y manos de virgen, con un rótulo que decía: “Nuestra Señora de la Soledad al pie de la Cruz”. El obispo ordenó la construcción de un santuario, iniciado en 1682 y completado en 1689, con la fachada terminada en 1718.

María Sabina Magdalena García (1894–1985), conocida como María Sabina, nació en Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca, en la cultura mazateca. Desde los ocho años, usó hongos alucinógenos en rituales chamánicos, tradición que existía en su comunidad mucho antes de la colonización.

Dedicada al chamanismo, se vio viuda dos veces, a los 20 y 43 años. Sus rituales nocturnos incluían mezcal, hierbas curativas, tabaco y cantos mazatecos. Su fama creció cuando Robert Gordon Wasson, al investigar los hongos en Mesoamérica, la conoció y la reconoció en su artículo publicado en Life. Esto atrajo a personalidades como Walt Disney, Aldous Huxley, John Lennon y Albert Hofmann.

Aunque vivía de manera sencilla, sobrevivía gracias a las donaciones que recibía por sus prácticas curativas, tanto físicas como espirituales.

Casilda Flores Morales (1910–1995), born in Oaxaca City, was unable to attend school due to restrictions on women but was taught by her mother to prepare aguas frescas, a family tradition passed down from her great-grandmother, Juana Ruiz. Her grandmother, María González Morales, “La Horchatera de Oaxaca,” was famous for creating almond horchata with prickly pear.

At 16, Casilda opened her aguas frescas stand in the Benito Juárez Market, a business that continues to thrive. Her drinks, including chilacayota, plum, lemon with chia, and almond horchata with prickly pear, became famous.

In 1949, she founded the all-female folkloric dance group Chinas Oaxaqueñas de Casilda, which promotes Oaxacan culture and participates in the Guelaguetza, the state’s largest folkloric dance festival.

Su abuela, María González Morales, “La Horchatera de Oaxaca,” fue famosa por crear la horchata de almendra con tuna.

A los 16 años, Casilda abrió su puesto de aguas frescas en el Mercado Benito Juárez, un negocio que continúa prosperando. Sus bebidas, como la de chilacayota, ciruela, limón con chía y horchata de almendra con tuna, se hicieron famosas.

Juana Catalina Romero Egaña (1837–1915), known as Juana Cata, was born in Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, into a humble family. Orphaned at a young age, she made aromatic ci******es to survive. During the Reform War, she sold food and medicine to the troops, gaining the respect of both sides and meeting Porfirio Díaz.

Over time, she opened a business that eventually exported local products. She learned to read and write with the help of Father Juan Mora, and after a trip to Europe, she adapted fine fabrics to the traditional Isthmus dress. Juana is remembered as a bold and entrepreneurial woman who defied the norms of her time.

Margarita Eustaquia Maza Parada (1826–1871), born in Oaxaca, was the adopted daughter of a wealthy family that also took in Benito Juárez, whom she married in 1843. Years later, as Mexico’s First Lady, she tirelessly supported her husband’s political ideals, even during his exile, sustaining their 12 children with a textile shop in Etla, Oaxaca, and sending financial aid to Juárez in New Orleans.

She endured periods of great uncertainty, such as the Reform War and the French Intervention, and temporarily exiled herself in New York. She returned to Mexico to witness the triumph of their shared struggles. Margarita was an independent and resilient woman, passing away in Mexico City in 1871.

Natalia Toledo Paz, born in Juchitán, Oaxaca, in 1968, is the daughter of renowned Oaxacan painter Francisco Toledo. She grew up in a bilingual environment, speaking Zapotec at home and Spanish at school, which deeply influenced her identity and work. From a young age, she showed a special interest in writing, particularly in Zapotec, a language through which she brings to life regional stories learned from her family and community.

Together with her father, she collaborated on creating Pies Ligeros, children’s stories inspired by the artist’s paintings. Her literary work, including poetry and books translated into English, has played a vital role in preserving and promoting indigenous languages in Mexico.

Each of our apartments was named after a famous woman who lived in Oaxaca. Here's a short biography of Olga:

Taide Olga Flores Rivas Zárate (1908–1994), known as Olga Tamayo, was the wife and muse of painter Rufino Tamayo, forming one of the most iconic marriages of 20th-century Mexico. They met in 1933 while Rufino was painting a mural at the National Conservatory of Music, where Olga studied piano, and married the following year.

Despite having opposite personalities, they achieved a harmony reflected in Rufino’s art, where Olga appears in at least twenty works. In addition to inspiring him, she managed his artistic career. The couple lived in Mexico City, New York, and Paris. Due to health issues, they could not have children. In her honor, Rufino added the initial “O” for Olga to his signature on all his works until the end of his career.

Taide Olga Flores Rivas Zárate (1908-1994), conocida como Olga Tamayo, fue la esposa y musa del pintor Rufino Tamayo, formando uno de los matrimonios más emblemáticos del México del siglo XX. Se conocieron en 1933 mientras Rufino pintaba un mural en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música, donde Olga estudiaba piano, y se casaron al año siguiente.

Aunque con personalidades opuestas, lograron una armonía que se reflejó en el arte de Rufino, donde Olga aparece en al menos veinte obras. Además de inspirarlo, administró su trabajo artístico. Vivieron en Ciudad de México, Nueva York y París, y debido a problemas de salud, no pudieron tener hijos. En su honor, Rufino incluyó la inicial “O” de Olga en todas sus firmas hasta el final de su carrera.

🌎 Bienvenido a nuestro encantador patio interior, que da acceso a varios apartamentos en Casona Soledad.
