And now... into the far south of Mexico, into the surreal reality of another kind of world. And we are going to hang out there for a while, because, quite frankly, it's fascinating.

I’d never seen or felt anything like this before. They spoke to me in silent words, these ancient stone creatures, in whispered emotion and memory.

New Blog post up! Meet me before I could say "have a nice day" in Spanish. (by the way, que tengan buen dia!)

My face probably mirrored that of everyone else in our level 2 Spanish; a mixture of awe and envy tinged by a secret, but overwhelming wish to be just like her but never, ever to invite her to our Spanish parties…

The shrine to the Virgin of Juquila in the southern mountains of Oaxaca draws tens of thousands of pilgrims each year. Some walk. Some bike. Some travel in the back of big trucks. Some go in caravans of tuk tuks. The point is to get there and pay reverence.

What hit me like a clear and uplifting breeze the moment I crossed the border was a symphonic cacophony of beautifully choreographed chaos. My head and my eyes swung from left to right and it was as if the air changed the moment we crossed the border.

That summer I was offered a job so unique that there was only one such position available on earth. The offer came to me suddenly as I stood on the edge of a parking lot while the man put a $50 bill in my shirt pocket.

Blog part 4 is up. Eric's magical saga of the last 12 months (and if you missed Part 3, because, ummm, I forgot to post it last week, start there)

The idea electrified both of us. It felt like the perfect mid-way point between LA and Ashland, between her life and mine. More than that actually, it felt like the place where together we could arise. It felt like the place that our coming together could take on a greater meaning, where we could ex

It is, I think, moments like this that really define us. You suddenly find yourself on the spot with a high stakes decision and the script is gone. How does that old saying go “separate the men from the boys”?

For those of you who appreciate Mexican textiles and traditional arts, this is an interesting article by Marta Turok about plagiarism and protection of indigenous creative expression. “Our know-how is not to be privatized or patented; our designs and our cultural heritage are part of the life of our territories”

Ethnic motifs are very much in style.

Boats awaiting fishermen who were once farmers on Isla Soyaltepec. This island was once a mountain in the jungle. In the 1960’s the Miguel Aleman dam was built and a lake called Mil Islas, a thousand islands, was born. The old paths and villages and corn fields drowned. Now the Mazatecs harvest Tilapia and live atop the old mountains. And Mexico City has electricity.

Forever I have been pulled forward by the desire to know what is around the next bend. I gaze into mountains like these in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca and I wish to go into them. I know they are filled with treasures of ancient culture and natural beauty. I want to and I do, and the land rewards me with the most moving gifts of existing.

Like old spirits moving through the air, mist huddles around the ancient cypress trees along the Apoala creek. This hidden valley with its rich soil has fed a village for countless ages. The fields of wheat and corn are plowed by oxen. Apples of red flesh grow in the trees. There are edible flowers and the agaves are milked for pulque. It is as if the spirits of the old ones whisper in the ears of the living: remember, this is how we have lived off this land forever, this is how we can live off this land forever.

Over the next week or two I will be giving Traditions Mexico an honorable farewell through a series of blog posts. Today’s post is the story of the first tour I ever guided 24 years ago. I dreamed it up from scratch, having never guided before. This moment was the birth of Traditions Mexico. https://traditionsmexico.com/blog/the-birth-of-traditions-mexico/

Dear all, Traditions Mexico tour company is closing its doors. It is apparent that we cannot financially survive the blows of this pandemic. Few small businesses are in a position to survive without revenue for 12-18 months, and that's what most of us in tourism are faced with. This a time of major disruption to the way we've done things up until now. It is a time to have your eyes wide open, be willing to let go, adapt and embrace change. As a dear advisor recently said, there is little to be gained by fighting against a crashing wave. I've body surfed the Pacific beaches of Mexico enough times to know that when you get caught in a wave, rolling with it is the best move. Sooner or later the turmoil and turbulence will pass, and you can swim up for a big breath, take a look around and decide what to do next. For my full letter about the choice to end my business read this blog post. I will continue to post here for a bit longer and then invite you to follow me at another digital address for what comes after the water settles. https://traditionsmexico.com/blog/the-end-of-a-journey/
