Government reports Playa del Carmen and Akumal with highest hotel occupancy rates in country

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen and Akumal have been reported as the two busiest tourist centers in the country. The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico says hotel occupancy rates in those two areas topped the most-occupied list in the first half of 2024.
iguel Torruco Marqués, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, reported Playa del Carmen with an average hotel occupany rate of 89 percent followed by Akumal with 82 percent.

Navy readying to build new sargassum collection vessel for Quintana Roo

The new coastal sargassum vessel (buque sargacero costero or BSC) will measure 15 meters in length, 5.5 meters in width and have a load capacity of 20 tons. The vessel will also be equipped with a sargassum collecting belt and a crane for handling weights of 2.6 tons, as well as all the necessary systems.

Mexico City, Mexico — Claudia Sheinbaum will be the first female president of Mexico after a landslide win. Sheinbaum won the general election with more than 58 percent of the votes Sunday.

While figures released by the National Electoral Institute (INE) are still preliminary, they have reported Sheinbaum with just over 27 million votes or around 58.7 percent of the votes cast around the country Sunday.

First Telsa battery & Solar Power for a Resort in Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun hotel is the first in the region to use a Tesla battery to store its solar energy. Company SolarFuel installed the Tesla made battery earlier this week on the grid of a 200-room hotel.

The battery will allow the hotel to store solar energy which is used to power the Golden Parnassus hotel during the hours of greatest electricity demand.

The U.S. imported battery relies on the energy supply provided by solar panels installed on the roof. Andrés Muñoz, Southeast Commercial Manager of SolarFuel, says the new system provides the hotel with a 35 percent savings on its monthly elctric bill.

The company, with capital from Monterrey, says that in Quintana Roo the hotel industry is eager for options to generate green energy so as not to depend solely on the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

Officials have been participating in talks with state hotels to install more of this energy solution.

“We currently have negotiations that represent potential sales for approximately $500 million dollars and cover some 30,000 rooms that we can land here in Quintana Roo, from Costa Mujeres and Cancun to Rivera Maya,” said the representative of the Monterrey firm.

The Tesla battery is programmed to be operational between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., a period that is called high demand and doubles the rate per watt, which increases the monthly billing for energy consumption by up to 35 percent.

The system installed in Cancun involves three types of installations that include the battery, water heaters and rooftop solar panels that generate 330 kilowatts per hour.
While the general cost is around $3.5 million, the business scheme they are proposing to the Quintana Roo hotel industry is zero investment for the hotel in exchange for SolarFuel keeping the 35 percent savings that the solution represents in the monthly billing.

The plan is for a period of 25 years after which the hotel becomes the owner of the installed equipment and extends a maintenance plan to SolarFuel.

The Golden Parnassus hotel is the first in Cancun to have a Tesla battery and an entire renewable energy system with solar panels.

INAH recovers 83 pre-Hispanic albarradas on Tren Maya route near Tulum airport.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Ceramics, flint knives and metates are some of the heritage assets found along of Section 6 of the Maya Train. According to a new report by the INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Historia), specialists have found 83 pre-Hispanic albarradas in the first “front” of that section.

Section 6 of Tren Maya consists of 254 kilometers that runs from the Tulum International Airport, which is located in the neighboring municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, to the state’s capital city of Chetumal.

Albarradas are limestone walls that commonly appear among pre-Hispanic vestiges, and since their construction is simple and effective, they are still used in contemporary rural architecture.
These last elements, he indicated, date from the Classic Mayan period (300 to 600 AD) and have varied dimensions, which range from five to 400 meters in length, with one meter wide and 70 centimeters high, on average.

The novelty of these structures, the archaeologist pointed out, lies in their design, which is distinguished from other albarradas by their location, close to bodies of water in some cases, and their irregular appearance in the shape of an “L” or chair, since they are normally linear structures.

“These characteristics have allowed us to formulate the hypothesis that, in this specific case, perhaps, they were used as a type of pre-Hispanic ‘Google Map’, which allowed the inhabitants to locate themselves in the region.”

Cozumel kicks off season early with first nesting sea turtle.

Cozumel, Q.R. — The first sea turtle nest of the 2024 season has been recorded on the island of Cozumel. The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation marked the first nest on the beaches of the Punta Sur turtle camp Thursday night.

In a statement, the Fundación de Parques y Museos of Cozumel reported locating the nest, which they said, officially started the nesting season. The nest was marked with the traditional dated stick in the sand for the sea turtle egg monitoring.

Cozumel biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz said that like every year around this time, the arrival of sea turtles begins. He says they travel great distances to nest on Cozumel beaches, where after hatching, the babies enter the sea to begin their life cycle.

He said that many of those that survive and reach adulthood return to the island to begin a new cycle.

“Today we mark the first marine turtle nest on the beaches of the Punta Sur turtle camp.
