A new generation in the making...

When you walk through the forest and suddenly a pair of Monarchs are falling from the sky. They are landing right in front of your feet. After taking a moment to recover from the impact, the female tries to escape one last time. But the male holds on tightly and drags his chosen one to the shade where she will have less energy available, and it will be easier for him to control her. If he is successful, they might stick together for up to around 16 hours. A new generation is on its way.

A lot of people ask us about the hikes at the Monarch Butterfly Reserves. Did you know that you can hire a horse to bring you closer to the clusters? The horse's owner will accompany you while you can take in the view and save your breath for the last approach to the monarchs that rest in the oyamel fir trees.

At all overwintering sites you can hire a horse (each horse comes with your personal guide) that brings you closer to the Monarchs. It is beautiful experience and at the same time you support the locals that call the oyamel fir forest their home.
