Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, Valladolid: Yucatan’s Historic Jewel

San Bernardino de Siena was established by the powerful Franciscan order in Valladolid’s main convent.

These “Franciscans” arrived in the Yucatan Peninsula in 1544 and were the first to disembark.

The San Bernardino de Siena convent is one of the oldest temples on the peninsula.

The architecture of the convent reflects the fusion of European and Maya styles, creating a unique structure of its kind.

In addition, the convent has beautiful gardens and courtyards that offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Church of San Servacio with its glorious tower, holds cannons that served to recover the city in 1848, from the hands of the rebellious Indians who started the Caste War. The inhabitants proudly preserve it as a reminder of their glorious past.

One of the most visited places in Valladolid is undoubtedly the Church of San Servacio, but it was not always like that, because in previous years they were not so valued, it was until its remodeling in 1703, when its entrance was even changed, this event was known in the city as “the crime of the mayors.”

🇪🇸La Iglesia de San Servacio, con su gloriosa torre, tiene cañones que sirvieron para recuperar la ciudad en 1848, de manos de los indios rebeldes que iniciaron la Guerra de Castas. Los habitantes lo conservan con orgullo como recordatorio de su glorioso pasado.

Uno de los lugares más visitados de Valladolid es sin duda la Iglesia de San Servacio, pero no siempre fue así, porque en años anteriores no fueron tan valorados, fue hasta su remodelación en 1703, cuando su entrada incluso se cambió, este evento fue conocido en la ciudad como “el crimen de los alcaldes”.

Get ready to explore what the Mayan called “Inframundo” o “Xibalba” with the Underworld Tour. This amazing experience will open your eyes to the awesome world of Cenote’s Caves and its underground rivers. Discover with us the sacred Mayan’s world and leave your offer to its guardians called “Aluxes”. Our guides will bring you through a path into the jungle to reach one of the entrances of the cave system. Here, we will find the Subterranean River with breathless cenotes of crystal water sources and a countless number of stalactites and stalagmites. Ten, you will also enjoy spectacular rock formations and crustacean fossils and reefs while our guides will tell us about their creation and origins.

The walk in the cave is approximately 2 hours. The path is well marked by a white thread and will lead us through tunnels and vaults till reaching the main cenote, lit by natural and artificial light. This magic and absolutely unconventional place has also an area with shallow waters. Here kids can enjoy a swim and adults can enter the deeper part of the cave and keep exploring.
