Your spring birding tune-up, or one good tern deserves another; Elegant, Royal and Sandwich Terns on the barrier beach of Manialtepec Lagoon, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mx. I was able to approach slowly by kayak within 25’. The birds are nervous as a Peregrine Falcon had just gone screaming by 10 minutes prior to this with a Jacana in its talons. The panic flight was a false alarm when a Black Vulture went sailing by overhead. The gulls, in both winter and breeding plumage, had a good laugh about it. March 13, 2020. Michael Malone. Red-billed Tropicbird observed 14 km offshore of Puerto Escondido while out on a fishing trip. They are plunge divers, like terns, breeding primarily in the Sea of Cortez (Baja California) and possibly on Roca Blanca (the sea stack off of Puerto Angel / Zipolite). Feb 14 2020. M Malone photos.

Double-striped Thick-knee

Double-striped Thick-knee 10 km west of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. I added this species to my local Manialtepec Lagoon checklist this past week when their calls alerted me to their presence. A client told me about them occurring near her house and I managed to take this photo. Their expanding range west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is unfortunately due to increased deforestation.

During our kayak tour with several clients while sipping coconuts in the shade we watched as 500 gulls leapt screaming into the air deserting the beach and alighting on the nearby lagoon. "Best Part of Our Trip" Trip Adviser Review for Hidden Voyages Ecotours Feb 22 2019

On 2/1/19, our family of four (2 adult sons, 2 parents) went on the boat tour which was suggested by Michael because it would get us deeper into the lagoon than the kayak tour (more birds). We contacted him pre-trip via email and he was very responsive and communicative and gave us all of the info we could possibly need. He arrived at our lodging exactly on time and everything was as detailed - from the scrumptious coffee to the excellent binoculars. Michael is an EXCELLENT guide (and this comes from two retired park rangers). We saw boat-billed herons, purple gallinules (with babies), and the splash of a crocodile plus a ton more. He had utmost respect from the way he explained the environment to his relationship with the boat operator. Lunch was also an incredible experience. We always vow to "experience something different" on a future trip, but we agreed that we would definitely come back to this area to see more. Next time we my opt for the kayak trip just because that looks just as inviting. Another tip - do a tour on one of the first days because it helps to set up the remainder of your trip.

Whereas most herons and egrets are ambush hunters lying in wait for their prey, this Reddish Egret actively pursues fish by running, leaping and spinning to spear them.
