Some fun facts about Xochimilco :

The Xochimilco canals were built by the *Aztecs* (or Mexica people) as part of an intricate system of chinampas, or floating gardens, to support agriculture in the region. The canals, along with the chinampas, were developed long before the Spanish arrived, around the 14th century. The Aztecs used these man-made islands to grow crops such as maize, beans, and squash by creating fertile plots within the shallow waters of Lake Xochimilco.

The chinampa system was a remarkable example of agricultural engineering, where small rectangular areas were created using layers of mud, aquatic vegetation, and other organic material, surrounded by canals. This method allowed for efficient water management and maximized crop yields, ensuring a reliable food supply for the expanding population of Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital.

Today, this remarkable area is not only used for agricultural purposes, tourism, and ecosystem preservation but is also a well-known venue for family gatherings and celebrations with music and food in a natural environment.
