So here's a fun fact:

There are 88 weather-forecasting prognosticator animals across North America. Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, is arguably the most famous, but there's also: Pisgah Piper (squirrel), Mojave Max (tortoise), Snohomish Slew (bullfrog), and Cluxatawney Henrietta (chicken). Surprisingly, there are also a great many taxidermized predictors (yep, stuffed). Now that's talent.

In 2025, a variety of little critters foretold of long winter weeks ahead, including good 'ole Phil, who shared his bad news and then went back into his hole to wait it out.

But how do we know he wasn't just heading back in there to pack his bags for a sunny getaway??

I took this photo when I was last at Casa Del Sol. I'm always in love with our view - no matter the weather - but this time I was really impressed. This photo looks like Mother Nature couldn’t make up her mind and decided to split the difference. On one side, you’ve got our standard Puerto Morelos postcard-worthy paradise with blue skies, shimmering ocean, and sand begging for a beach towel. On the other, it’s like a dramatic soap opera—dark clouds, sheets of rain, and black ocean so grumpy it's practically growling. It’s the ultimate beach day for indecisive people: sunbathe on one side, run for cover on the other. Honestly, it’s as if the weather forecast said, “50% chance of rain,” and the universe took it literally.

It's no secret that, over the last decade or so, we have become a society that prefers to pay with plastic. Not many of us find ourselves in the bank each week the way we used to. Instead, we tap, swipe, and share our Visa, MasterCard, and American Express cards, to cover every cost and eventuality.

Up until recently, Casa Del Sol was not equipped to take payments with credit cards. But that all changed with our connection to "Stripe", a platform that allows businesses like mine to offer this convenience.

But what about fees, you ask?

Well, yes, they do charge fees; 4% to be exact. And, no, that's not great. BUT, it may actually provide you with potential savings. For those of you who usually purchase travel insurance, you'll know it can be pretty expensive. Depending on your card benefits, however, you may find that by paying with your credit card, you are covered for insurance already and can forgo that added expense. Food for thought.

Rest assured we'll still have the same payment options we've always had of direct deposit, digital banking, and wire transfer. We've just added plastic to the mix!

I hate to cook. Always have. So when we started staying at vacation homes when the kids were small, I was a little trepidatious about cooking expectations. As I said to my husband, if I'm making meals for the kids while we're away then it's not a vacation: it's just geography.

When you go on holiday you don't want to think too hard about your next meal; you want to enjoy the decision - relatively quickly - and know there will be food everyone likes. Puerto Morelos is awash with amazing places to eat. You'll have a tough time deciding. But if you're one of our bigger groups of 10-16 people, eating out can get to be expensive and logistically challenging. Plus, sometimes you just want to have a meal by the pool!

What better way to enjoy the most amazing regional dishes, relaxing at home, with no mess or fuss or effort, than to have Nina cook you dinner? Nina is famous among our guests for making delicious meals for the smallest to the largest of groups, using fresh ingredients, incredible variety, and traditional local methods. Her rates are incredibly reasonable and she adds them to the cost of groceries. Not only will you be thrilled with her culinary offerings, but you'll be incredibly pleased with the cost to feed your clan.

And since Nina can also make breakfasts and lunches, there's never a need to lift a finger at Casa Del Sol.

That's my kind of vacation.

Okay, so I'm not what you might call a "sports enthusiast". I don't follow any teams, I have virtually no clue as to what the rules are with football, soccer, and even hockey. But I do know when to tune in for a good game. And so do a lot of our guests.

While almost every minute you're here will be spent out enjoying the gorgeous infinity pool, lazing on the expansive verandas, chilling on the warm beach, and exploring the beautiful town of Puerto Morelos, there are a few hours on your vacation when you might just want to watch that all important game.

I always think of April and May as being lovely spring months with budding flowers and the beginning of warm days. But, really, that's not always the case, is it? Often, the winter just doesn't want to let go. Cold gusts and days of rain seem to linger between those slightly longer days that have just a little more sun.

For over 10 years my husband and I have spent the last week in April in the Mayan Riviera. We love that we leave home while winter is still playing with us, and arrive home fast forwarded by a week into less of the bad and more of the good.

And Puerto Morelos is so amazing in those months. It's not as crowded, and the ocean, pool, and breezes are that little bit warmer, while the heat of summer hasn't settled in yet.

March may have been scooped up but there are two weeks each in April and May for you to consider. I invite you to fast forward to Spring at Casa Del Sol. You won't regret it!

By the time March rolls around, I'm sick to death of the chilly air, dreary skies, and leafless trees. I know you folks feel the same way or we wouldn't be fully booked all winter every year (even 2026 is nearly gone)!

But once in a very blue moon we have a cancellation come up for one of those coveted weeks of winter.

So here is is - March 15-22, 2025 - open for booking. We can fit up to 14 adults in king beds, plus 2 kids in bunk beds, (plus infants) and all with ensuite bathrooms! So get the gang together and come on down!

When I got my first credit card bill, I made the mistake of only paying the "minimum payment" required. Needless to say, I quickly learned never to carry a balance. There was no way I could afford those interest charges on my meagre salary.

Nowadays, with online payment systems charging us just to use the card, we haven't had a lot of interest from our guests to pay that way. Until now.

It turns out that there is a way where fees can work in your favour (according to one of my very clever guests). Having looked into the benefits of the credit card she was using, she realized that, by paying with her card, she could forgo purchasing travel insurance separately.

According to Forbes, the cost of travel insurance can run you 4%-6% of your total trip cost, and that's for fairly basic insurance, and it doesn't include added premiums charged for being a "senior".

So, long story short, you can now use your credit card to book your stay at Casa Del Sol!

(PS: We're using Stripe to offer this option, and their fee is 4%. )

I'll share with you how we start our days when we stay at Casa Del Sol.

First, we watch the sun come up while enjoying our morning coffee.

Next, just before 9:30, we grab a couple of the yoga mats, hop on our bikes and ride the three minutes over to Mina's shala where, with a few other beginners, we participate in an hour of gentle, calming yoga, under the shade of the palapa and feeling the cool tropical breeze through the screens.

Sufficiently Zen, we make our way back and, within minutes, we are sitting by the pool in our bathing suits, relaxed and ready for a day with friends and family.

For those of our guests who may want the view of the ocean to be part of their yoga experience, Mina will come to Casa Del Sol and lead you through a private class, geared to your needs and abilities, either on the pool deck or in the shade of the second floor verandah.

Sharing the beauty of Casa Del Sol, and the wonderful town of Puerto Morelos, brings me such joy.
I love it when people arrive for the first time and walk into the house to find the window wall wide open, the pool and the ocean visible from the front door.
I love it when they look out over the beach and marvel at the waves cresting over the reef in the distance.
I love it when, on their first night, they look up to see the clear sky, the bright stars, and a beautiful moon.
And I really love it when they see their first sunrise; the quiet of the morning, the awe at the multitude of colours spread over the sea and the pool.

I'm lucky to have guests who share these amazing experiences with me and send me the moments they've captured, moments they can share with others and that sustain them while they wait to return.

This beautiful moment in particular was captured by Tim A. As a thank you for sharing it with us, Tim, when you next return, Nina, our wonderful local chef, will make you and your group an amazing regional meal, with my compliments!
