A must share…From our fellow local brokers.

I've been feeling a rant coming on for a few weeks, then yesterday I had an interaction that pushed me over the edge and I just can't stop thinking about it.

A person disappointed that they couldn't buy a large oceanfront home here (for the amount they wanted to spend) because the prices are "too high" concluded that the prices must be high because of the Californians moving here willing to pay California prices "because I know the nationals aren't buying those homes."

What?

A. Mexico is not the USA, and many factors completely unrelated to the USA drive prices of property in our area, which is a gorgeous Caribbean coastline with limited inventory attractive to people ALL AROUND THE WORLD and

B. This may come as a shock to some folks whose only idea of a Mexican is that they are dying to come to the USA and "steal jobs", but Mexico not only hosts one of the richest men in the world, it's a huge country, with a population that includes (gasp) rich people who can and do buy multi-million dollar homes on the Caribbean coast and all around the world, actually.

(And here's another tip: Mexico has rich people, poor people, educated and uneducated people, world class athletes, chefs, scientists, teachers, pilots, authors, actors, singers, tech giants, manufacturing, you name it - and Mexicans have a rainbow of skin colors and hair colors and immigrant influences from Asia to Lebanon to Spain to Italy to Ireland to Germany and more, and many Mexicans speak at least two languages, and often more)

The person who said this to me isn't evil or awful - but this is the casual prejudice I've talked about before.

Americans seem to be breathtakingly unaware that an entire world exists outside of America and that this world hosts many beautiful, different, rich cultures (oftentimes with people who don't speak English - can you imagine!) who have survived millenia without American tourist dollars.

I'm American, and sometimes I'm really embarrassed by our inherent sense of entitlement and complete lack of education about the world beyond our borders. And especially about our closest neighbors.

I know that when I moved here, I also made some of these assumptions and mistakes and I'm really ashamed of that. It's a learning process, but first you have to be aware of your inherent biases and prejudices. Think about what you say before you say it, question your conclusions - are they based on fact?

In this case, yes, there are a lot of Americans choosing to buy homes and even relocate permanently to Mexico. In our specific area there are way more Texans than Californians, but that's neither here nor there. (and ALL of Minnesota seems to be here in the winter :) This has influenced the residential home sale and rental market. No doubt. But is it the only driver? NO. Will the market die if Americans stop coming, no. Will Puerto Morelos die without the American tourist dollar, no.

There's been a very vocal pushback against Americans moving to Mexico recently, and I think it's worth paying attention to. And it's an opportunity to check our behavior.

Mexicans are warm, welcoming people and really have opened their doors to Americans - and we've repaid that by demanding that their beautiful, rich culture change to make us feel more "at home". We are so convinced that our way is "right" and the "only way" to do things. We trash talk Mexicans and Mexican culture (many times to their faces and then wonder what we did wrong....). We ask - no, we demand, that Mexico change to accommodate us, instead of changing to accommodate the culture we CHOOSE to live in.

I guess the point of my rant is that I hope we can agree that the "ugly American" is not how we want to be known. Not here. Not among the people we are choosing to live with. Let's try to be better. Let's bring the best of ourselves, not the worst.
