Here are a couple of pictures provided by James Bryant of an extremely rare occurrence inside of Laguna San Ignacio. A Dolphin approached the whale watching boat and interacted with the passengers. Some of them were even able to touch the dolphin.
A fisherman in the town of Abre Ojos, just north of the mouth of the lagoon has created a friendship with dolphins who come up to his boat. This dolphin may be one of them. James Bryant and the people on this boat witnessed something extremely rare.

Each day that passes more whales enter Laguna San Ignacio. These beautiful pictures were taken by our Captain Valentin Aguilar Liera. A close encounter of this type does not happen every day but when it does it is magical.
Keep in mind that this is a wild animal in it's natural environment. Why do they choose to seek contact with human beings?

The pod of Orcas that was seen last week inside of Laguna San Ignacio was seen again this morning by a boat captain from another outfit. It is not known whether any Gray whales were attacked.
Researchers from the University of Baja California think that the adults may be training the younger ones in the art of hunting.

This great picture was taken yesterday by Mark Eason. It clearly shows 2 of the Orcas seen inside of Laguna San Ignacio for the first time during the Gray whale birthing and mating season since we have been keeping records though they have been seen during the summer months but many years ago.
For the past 3 seasons we have had a special visitor, Humphrey the Humpback whale visit Laguna San Ignacio in December and he has stayed for a few days each season. Before Humphrey, a Humpback whale had never been seen inside of this lagoon.
Could the Orcas' appearance inside of the lagoon this season also mark the beginning of a new seasonal behavior?
Perhaps 500 or 1000 years ago, before humans began to keep written records the Orcas also visited Laguna San Ignacio each year?

For the first time in many many years a pod of Orcas has entered Laguna San Ignacio. A piece of Gray Whale skin was found in the area in which the pod was seen which leads us to believe that they have attacked a baby Gray whale. Fishermen have seen them inside of the lagoon in the past but not during Gray whale mating and birthing season.
It was only a matter of time before they learned to enter the Breeding lagoons. This is part of the reality of nature and there is nothing we humans can do but observe and record for posterity.
