La flor de cempasúchill es un elemento de alusion prehispanica utilizada hoy en día en la celebración de Día de Muertos. La palabra proviene de la lengua Nahualt, sempôwalxôchitl, la cual deriva de dos sustantivos: sempôwal, que significa 20, y xôchitl, que significa flor. Su traducción sería la flor de 20 flores o la flor de 20.
El 20 es muy importante para el mundo pre-colombino ya que se utilizaba un sistema numérico vigecimal, este sistema se basa en múltiplos de 20, a diferencia del sistema decimal actual, basado en múltiplos de 10, los meses eran veintenas y, algo muy interesante y poco conocido es que la flor se usa en referencia al renacimiento ya que cuenta con un organo de reserva subterraneo el cual le permite volver a surgir el siguiente ciclo, además su hermoso color naranja esta relacionado con el maíz maduro ya que la tradicion de día de muertos coincide con la celebración del final del ciclo agricola que deja milpas secas y la ansiada cosecha.
