The Fco. J Clavijero Botanical Garden, established in 1977 on a stunning former coffee and citrus farm near Xalapa, in the state of Veracruz, is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves plants and nature!

This garden is dedicated to cultivating and protecting local flora, focusing on endangered species. By partnering with the Veracruz Ministry of Education, the garden offers exciting environmental education programs, including hands-on workshops and engaging guided tours that inspire visitors of all ages.

Its mission is to showcase a diverse collection of living plants while fostering research and education that drive conservation efforts. The garden plays a vital role in preserving unique cloud forest species and enthusiastically promotes the sustainable use of delicious wild plants from central Veracruz.

Nestled between the municipalities of Celestún and Maxcanú in the State of Yucatán and Calkiní in the State of Campeche, the Biosphere Reserve of Ría Celestún encompasses a stunning area of 81,482.33 ha. It is home to four species of mangroves, each recognized for their importance, along with thriving petenes, coastal dune vegetation, savannah, and low flooded forests. This rich ecosystem provides a vital sanctuary for an incredible variety of species.

The site boasts a magnificent diversity of fauna, highlighted by 304 species of resident and migratory birds. It is an essential nesting, resting, feeding, and reproduction ground for the elegant American Flamingo. Additionally, it plays a crucial role as a nesting area for the Hawksbill turtle, with sightings of Loggerhead turtle juveniles adding to its importance.

The Reserve thrives on three vital productive activities: fishing, ecotourism, and salt extraction, showcasing the harmony between human endeavors and the natural world.

During a recent visit to Cuenca de La Esperanza Natural Protected Area, we took a proactive step to contribute to the conservation of this natural wonder by donating and installing Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers on the Visitor Center’s kitchen window in order to dramatically reduce bird collisions.

This initiative is particularly vital as the area has been grappling with challenges such as a prolonged drought since October 2023 and a severe hail storm in June 2024, which have had a significant impact on bird populations.

As bird populations decline, it becomes vital to protect these vulnerable creatures. One significant threat they face is collisions with glass windows, which result in millions of bird fatalities annually. We can prevent these tragic collisions by placing markers on windows to make them more visible to birds.

At our company, we promote eco-tourism and sustainable practices and advocate for wildlife protection. By supporting initiatives focused on bird protection, we hope to inspire others to safeguard these vital members of our ecosystem.

We loved spending the day birding in Xichu and seeing all the wonderful feathered friends on our tour. The diversity of birdlife in the Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra Gorda de Guanajuato is incredible.

It was noticeable that the migratory birds were gone -or at least most of them. Yet we enjoyed a very nice morning of birding at El Charco del Ingenio-Jardín Botánico, with more than 60 bird species. As a reward, we got the famous El Charco Chilaquiles at the cafeteria.

A bird to brighten up your weekend: Crimson-collared Grosbeak.

On the last day of our Sierra Gorda & Huasteca Birding Adventure, we were greatly surprised by the attractive Crimson-collared Grosbeak.

This bird is native to a limited region of northeastern Mexico. The adult male is dark with a black hood and broad pinkish-red collar, while the female is drab greenish overall with a black hood.
