Nestled between the municipalities of Celestún and Maxcanú in the State of Yucatán and Calkiní in the State of Campeche, the Biosphere Reserve of Ría Celestún encompasses a stunning area of 81,482.33 ha. It is home to four species of mangroves, each recognized for their importance, along with thriving petenes, coastal dune vegetation, savannah, and low flooded forests. This rich ecosystem provides a vital sanctuary for an incredible variety of species.
The site boasts a magnificent diversity of fauna, highlighted by 304 species of resident and migratory birds. It is an essential nesting, resting, feeding, and reproduction ground for the elegant American Flamingo. Additionally, it plays a crucial role as a nesting area for the Hawksbill turtle, with sightings of Loggerhead turtle juveniles adding to its importance.
The Reserve thrives on three vital productive activities: fishing, ecotourism, and salt extraction, showcasing the harmony between human endeavors and the natural world.
