A great article published in the USA Today explains why United States citizens spend far more on health care than anywhere else in the world but have the lowest life expectancy among large, wealthy countries.

The unique aspects of the health care system explain a lot of that. For example, the USA rewards doctors more for medical procedures than for keeping people healthy, hides costs from customers, and spends money on tasks that have nothing to do with making patients feel better.

We love going for blood work and getting the results hours later. We also enjoy that if we need to see a specialist, we can do so within 24 hours here in Mexico. My insurance is inexpensive, and all procedures are 1/10 the state's cost. So many of my friends ask, "Is the health care OK in Mexico?" I have to tell them it is better and far less costly.
