For the Mexica, this flower was considered a symbol of life and death, and still plays an important part in connecting the worlds of the living and the deceased for some of Mexico's indigenous cultures.

During Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations (Día de Mu***os), we can see Cempasúchil flowers decorating altars and cemeteries; the bright colour is said to light up the way and the smell guides the souls of lost loved ones to the alters created by their living family members.

A few words from Ruth:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and on this trip I did find it hard to put my camera down. However, this particular subject was not easy to photograph, so here go some words:

As many of you know, I love travelling Mexico, and it is not unusual to hear me say after a scouting trip, “wow, I could live there”; well this place was no exception! I am going to skip over the first section of the trip that took us through the breathtaking scenery of Tlaxcala’s countryside with the backdrop of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes and showed us fireflies lighting up the understory layer of the forest, and get right into one of the most special experiences I’ve had with nature in Mexico.

Starting in a Magic town that sits at just under 2,000 metres above sea level in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, we began our descent with a brief stop to appreciate one of the many waterfalls that breaks up the seemingly never ending green of the landscape. Words like, “wow”, “what a cool place”, and “awesome” were exchanged before we got back in the car to continue our journey. At our next stop, our excited chatter turned to low whispers and expressions of absolute amazement; maybe it was the mystical feel of being surrounded by clouds, or maybe we just wanted to blend in with our environment - there’s something incredibly special about only being able to hear birds and insects.

As we advanced, there was a noticeable change in the temperature and humidity, reflected in the changing vegetation; the pines were being replaced by massive ferns and beautiful flowers, and we were getting more and more excited about what was to come. We left the car and set off on a short walk through the forest, which opened up to a serene lake. No cars, no motors on the boats, very few people, and the sound, well - I felt like I was back in the rainforests of Peru! We waited happily (I won’t say patiently, because it was an absolute pleasure just to sit and enjoy our surroundings) for the sun to begin its descent, before climbing into a small boat for our evening tour around the lake.

This is so hard to describe; we barely spoke during the whole boat ride. For over an hour we sat and listened to the wooden oars gently drop into the water and propel us along as we witnessed an absolute wonder of nature. The trees around us started to sparkle like enormous Christmas trees with delicate yellow lights. They were everywhere!

- MELAQUE: 10 am - 2 pm Wednesday to Saturday until June, then Monday to Saturday (we are taking a course Mondays and Tuesdays until June).
