Experience Agave owner, Clayton Szczech, tapped for comment says, “Since the revolution …there has been a widespread expectation of state support for the countryside that only started to be unraveled or betrayed in the 1980s with Mexico’s neoliberal turn, which was consummated with NAFTA in 1994.”

Last week, agaveros gathered in Tequila to protest alleged dirty deals, abusive tactics, and serious corruption in the tequila industry. These are not new allegations as the Mexican Agave Council had previously asked the Mexican government to look into the problems the farmers were seeing but these are by far and away the most public accusations and protests in years.

While the plummeting price of agave, which is now running about 1-2 pesos per kilo, is a primary concern for the farmers, they also allege other practices like increasing adulteration of product they feel are endangering the very integrity of the spirit itself. Contributor Felisa Rogers was on the ground and had a chance to speak with leaders of the council and farmers. She also provides great background and context for how this moment arrived.

Come along on a day tour based in the picturesque village of Comala, Colima. You will visit traditional mezcaleros around the Volcán de Colima in Southern Jalisco. This region is likely the birthplace of distillation in Western Mexico: mezcal has been made here since 1616, and the distillation of vino de cocos is even older. The region’s Mezcaleros continue to distill in internal condensation, wood-and-copper “Asiatic” stills introduced to the region by Filipinos during the sixteenth century. You will visit two traditional mezcal distilleries (tabernas), learning about production and tasting one of the most small batch spirits in the world. You’ll see first hand how this unique regional tradition differs from other regional mezcals. This experience is led by a bilingual local guide with over 10 years of experience in the region, Lucie Canuel.
