These land turtles love to crawl around, but usually stay away from human infrastructure.
We found this one within the marina, on the direction to the parking lot.
We made sure she was back in the green areas before we left.

Who’s mastering buoyancy better?
This is a barracuda steadily performing his motionless hover, while getting a little wash-off over one of the many “cleaning stations” we have on #cozumel reefs.
All the fishes around are swimming freely because they know that while the surgeon and the butterfly fishes are tiny underwater care takers.
They love to feed on the fish dead tissues, cleaning their wounds so they heal faster.
The barracuda also let the wrasses in their mouth, as they act as their dentist, removing any little piece of dead flesh from their previous snacks.
Obviously the wrasses and other fishes around are NOT part of the barracuda’s menu, they can be around knowing they won’t finish where they are cleaning.

The Rainbow Parrot fish is so important in the ecosystem it leaves in. Crunching on the stony corals, they remove a layer of algae and clean the hard corals with each of their bits.
They are easy to distinguish with their beak like mouth, and their green and orange body colors.
If you see a stardust tail behind them, this is the process of making beach. They digest the coral structure, absorbing all nutrients from them, then releasing the bony structure as powder, which is sand that will end up on the beach at some point.

Basket coral are an amazing organism that crawl the reefs, and catch its food from the water movement by extending its branches, deploying them as if it was a fiction movie.
We find them at night, as they escape the day light, hiding deep in one of the million reef cracks. You can actually witness it by lighting them up during your night dive, then you will see how it retracts its extremities!

May 23rd is the day we celebrate our beloved ocean travelers.
It also mark the beginning of the turtle mating and nesting season in The Riviera Maya, and more specifically in Cozumel, on the “wild side” of the island, we’re beaches are laying for miles.
The Green turtles and the Loggerheads are laying eggs every night from now, and we expect to count around 5000, up to 7000 nest through the summer.
Working hard at night, they would be found on the reefs during the day, gaining energy while snacking and resting.

Mister Scorpion Fish on the show !
These guys are mostly bottom crawlers, hiding anywhere on reef where the can camouflage and spy there surroundings, awaiting for the right pray to swim by its powerful extending jaw. They usually disappear in a fraction of a second, while the scorpion fish would swim a bit further, ambushed for its next snack !

The hawksbill turtle are amongst some of the residents here on the reefs. We see them year round, as they have quite a few feeding grounds around the island.
They are recognizable with their prominent head that is hawk-like, with a powerful beak/bill. That’s where its name is from.
They use it to break coral’s structures and sponges to snack on algae, pieces of coral, mollusks and other small organisms.
They are reptiles, and breathe Oxygen from the atmosphere. They holds their breath form a 35 to 45 minutes while feeding, but need to breath every now and then. Although, they can be found resting for as long as 5 hours.

Flying Gurnards, Have you ever saw one while diving ?
The flying gurnards are bottom dwellers, found crawling over sea grass areas, they open their wings (aka fins) if they feel threatened or want to swim away.
Their squared face shaped and legs like fins make them a weird yet amazing fish. The pattern on their wings are an electric blue with mystical drawings.
