🛡️ Exploring Querétaro’s Coat of Arms 🛡️

This unique coat of arms is packed with symbolism!

✨ Top: A radiant sun + a cross. These motifs are central to the city’s identity, tied to the legendary appearance of the cross in the sky during a battle between the Spanish + indigenous peoples.

🐴 Bottom Left: A warrior on horseback—likely St. James, the patron saint of Querétaro, symbolizing protection + victory.

🌳 Bottom Right: A tree (or vineyard), symbolizing the region’s natural richness, growth, and agricultural heritage. If it is indeed a vine, it highlights the importance of viticulture (wine production) in Querétaro that continues into our day. 🍷

Did you know? Querétaro boasts over 20 different coats of arms across the state, city, and municipalities, each telling a unique story of history + culture! 🌞

💊 It’s Vitamin- T Tuesday! 🌽✨ And for today’s dose of Mexico’s most important vitamin, Vitamin -T, let’s explore Tlayoyos (also known as tlacoyos) from Puebla!

🌽These delicious masa pockets stuffed with alberjon (bean), then grilled or fried to perfection, are a taste sensation you won’t soon forget. (Mine was smothered in salsa verde for an extra punch of flavor. 🤛)And here’s the secret ingredient that makes them extra special: hojas de aguacate - avocado leaves! 🥑🍃 They add a deliciously distinctive flavor that elevates these delights to a whole new level. 🚀

🤓Fun fact: Tlayoyos have a rich history dating back to pre-Hispanic times, believed to have originated from the culinary traditions of the Nahuatl-speaking indigenous peoples of Mexico, such as the Aztecs who inhabited the central region of Mexico, including present-day Puebla. 🗺 Over centuries, this traditional dish has evolved, becoming a beloved staple in Puebla’s culinary landscape. 💞Today, it stands as a proud symbol of Mexican heritage, cherished for its unique taste and cultural significance. 🎉 (Swipe to see how they’re skillfully made!)

❗️Whether you’re a foodie or just craving something delicious, Tlayoyos are a must-try! 🤤🔥

🏛 Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Querétaro 🏛

🔨Built between 1752 and 1756, the Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo is a stunning example of Baroque architecture in Mexico. 💎 Predominantly designed by Ignacio Mariano de las Casas, an important Mexican architect/craftsman of the time, it features intricate carvings and statues on its façade and ornate altars inside inlaid with precious woods, ivory, silver and tortoiseshell. 🌟It also claims to house the earliest four-sided clock in the Americas. 🕰️

🗓️Over the decades it has functioned as a college, convent, hospital, and school and currently operates as a museum and headquarters for the Center of Art and Culture. 🎭This architectural gem and the surrounding plaza should not be missed. 💕(You can even find the giant “Queretaro” letters in the plaza for some fun Instagramable moments.) 📸

💊 It’s Vitamin-T Tuesday! ✨ And for today’s dose of Mexico’s most important vitamin, Vitamin-T, let’s explore the unique taste of Queretaro’s Tepache! 🍍

🫧 A fermented beverage made with pineapple, water, piloncillo, and spices like cinnamon and cloves, tepache is a refreshing and tangy traditional beverage perfect for a sunny day. ☀️

🍹 Tepache can be found in many parts of Mexico, with variations in the recipe from region to region. 📍In Queretaro, we sometimes add tejocote, a type of Mexican hawthorn fruit, which adds a slightly sour and floral note to the drink which gives it our own unique twist. 🌸 The fermentation process in Queretaro is typically done for a few days, allowing the flavors to develop giving it a slightly fizzy texture, making it a delightful treat for your taste buds. Just ask our guest who was visiting from Russia! 😛

🤓 Not only is tepache delicious, but since it’s a fermented beverage, those good probiotics, can support gut health and digestion. 🎉 Not to mention that, pineapple, the main ingredient in tepache, is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which may have various health benefits. 🩺¡Provecho! 🫶🏽

🌮 It’s Food Fact Friday! Today, we’re talking about a classic Mexican snack: Chicharrón!🔥

🐖 Chicharrón is crispy fried pork skin, seasoned with salt, chili powder, or other spices. 🧂 It’s a versatile ingredient, perfect for snacking or as a topping for tacos, soups, and salads. 🥗 In some regions, it’s even cooked with salsa for a delicious dish called chicharrón en salsa. Very often the salsa is a salsa verde, a tangy salsa with a tomatillo base. 🍅💚 Swipe right to see a photo of un taco de chicharró en salsa. 😋

📍When you’re in Querétaro, you can head down to el Mercado La Cruz to pick up some fresh chicharrón to satisfy your snacking needs! 🛍️

🎉 Discovering the Art of Papel Picado! ✂️

Did you know that the vibrant and intricate paper cutouts adorning Mexican streets have a fascinating history? 🎨📜 Let’s dive into the world of Papel Picado!

📖 Originating from pre-Hispanic Mexico, papel picado (literally translated “chopped paper”) has deep roots in indigenous cultures when they used papel amate (bark paper) to create elaborate designs for religious ceremonies. After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, European influence introduced the use of metal tools for paper cutting, and papel picado evolved into the beautiful folk art form we recognize today. 💖

💚These beautifully intricate paper cutouts are now used to decorate streets, homes, and public spaces during a variety of celebrations. It’s a way the streets of Mexico say, “Something wonderful is being recognized here!”🪩

🌸 Artisans create papel picado by layering several sheets of tissue paper and then folding and cutting them with knives, or small chisels to form intricate designs. The designs often include geometric patterns, floral motifs, and other cultural symbols. The cutting process requires precision and skill to achieve the delicate and symmetrical patterns. Each cut holds a story and represents the fragility of life.🦋

🕰️Today, papel picado is not just decoration; it’s a cultural symbol, embodying the rich tapestry of Mexican identity. Many artisans continue this tradition, adding a modern twist to this timeless craft.⌛️

💐Swipe to see the papel picado David and Annamaria used at their wedding celebration. 🎊 (Fun fact: the date is wrong! If you want to know the whole story on that you’ll have to ask David, who was in charge of this wedding task. 😆)

¡Vamos a explorar las tradiciones mexicanas! Let’s explore Mexican traditions together on one of our walking tours through Queretaro’s gorgeous centro historico. 🎨✨
