We are so grateful for the givers and helping hands that have kept Bet Shalom going for over 10 years, giving a loving home to at-risk seniors. What keeps us operating- how we pay caregivers, give 5 nutritional meals a day to our residents, pay bills and materials needed to upkeep/maintenance is fully done by donations, which we are in constant need of.

Feliz Día de los Reyes Magos/ 3 Kings Day!
• What is the Day of the 3 Kings, and why do we celebrate with a coffee cake ring?
According to tradition, the 3 wise men/kings traveled from the East towards Jerusalem, following a star to adore a newborn king and bring him offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They stopped to ask King Herod for directions, who then asked his scribes where prophecy said he would be born. Herod sent the 3 kings to Bethlehem, asking them to return to advise him where to find the new child king “so that he could go adore him as well”- although in reality Herod wanted to know in order to kill the child. The 3 kings followed the star to Bethlehem, arriving on Epiphany (January 6), worshipped the child Jesus, but did not return to Jerusalem, due to a dream. Joseph also had a dream telling him to get up and take his wife Mary and son Jesus and flee to hide in Egypt, far from Herod’s wrath.

In Mexico, we celebrate all of that with a round “coffee cake” type bread that is called “La Rosca de Reyes”.
La Rosca de Reyes:
The circular form represents the crown of the kings as well as God’s infinite love.
The crystallized fruits represent the jewels in the crowns, the gifts of the magi and the distractions of the world from finding Jesus.
The hidden baby Jesus is symbolic of when Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to hide him from Herod.
The tradition here in Mexico is that everyone takes a turn cutting their slice of the rosca, and whoever gets the hidden baby Jesus must take care of it until Candaleria Day/ February 2, at which point they host a fiesta with stole and tamales for everyone.
Also on Día de Los Reyes in Mexico, the 3 Kings leave gifts for children- representing the gifts they left Jesus.

It’s Navidad time in Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo!!
