Hairy-Nosed Otter, also known as the Sunda Otter, is a species found in Southeast Asia, inhabiting freshwater environments. It is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the 1990s, it was believed to be extinct, but later sightings were made in Cambodia, Thailand, Borneo, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
One of the notable behaviors of the Hairy-Nosed Otter is its preference for nocturnal activity. It typically hunts at night and often hunts alone, though sometimes small groups of 2 to 4 individuals work together. Their diet consists mainly of fish, crabs, waterfowl, water snakes, frogs, and even small mammals.
However, the Hairy-Nosed Otter faces significant survival threats. Poaching for its valuable fur and the destruction of its habitat have both contributed to its endangered status. Protecting this species and its natural habitats is a critical global biodiversity conservation issue.
