The smooth-coated otter is one of Asia’s largest otters weighing up to 11kg and growing up to 64cm in length. They have short legs and large webbed and clawed feet which help with swimming. They are named for their smooth and sleek pelage and are easily distinguished from other otter species by their hairless diamond-shaped nose and rounded head. They have a large range from the Indian subcontinent through Southeast Asia and of course on our beautiful island of Borneo where we spot them most often in mangrove forests. We found this cute guy feasting in Tabin Wildlife Reserve.

The colugo, also known as the Sunda flying lemur, is not a true lemur and does not fly in the traditional sense. Instead, it is one of the most skilled gliding mammals in the world. A large fur-covered membrane of skin, called a patagium, stretches from its face to the tips of its fingers, toes, and tail—allowing it to glide distances of up to 70 meters between trees. Colugos are completely arboreal, spending nearly all of their lives in the canopy. They are nocturnal, solitary, and highly adapted to life in the dense tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Their webbed limbs and broad gliding membrane make them remarkably efficient at navigating their forest habitat without ever touching the ground.

The great argus is native to the jungles of the Malay peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. Their name is derived from Argus, the hundred eyed giant in Greek mythology, as their wings and tail have beautiful and intricate eye like patterns. They are a member of the pheasant family and can grow up to 160-200cm in length. Not only is the male great argus one of the largest of all pheasants but they also have the longest tail feathers of any bird in the wild. The males also have an incredible courtship dance where they clear an area on the forest floor, raise their tail, fan their wings, and stomp their feet in an impressive display for attention.

Binturongs, also known as bearcats, aren’t actually related to bears or cats—they belong to the civet family. These fascinating creatures grow between 60-90cm long and have thick, coarse black fur. With five toes on each foot and strong claws, they are expert climbers, spending most of their time in trees. Another one of their standout features is their fully prehensile tail, which acts like a fifth limb, helping them navigate the treetops. Binturongs are native to the dense tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, but they’re tough to spot—they’re secretive, well-camouflaged, and prefer to stay hidden. These unique creatures are just another example of the incredible wildlife that calls our rainforests home.
