Helmeted hornbills are unique among Asia’s hornbills with their long tail feathers, two central ones much longer than the others, making the helmeted hornbill the longest of any hornbill species. They also claim the title of the largest hornbills in Asia with a large solid casque which males use in head to head combat. Helmeted hornbills are a big fan of figs and they are often seen in healthy lowland tropical forests with a plethora of fruiting fig trees. As fruit eaters, they are an integral part of our forest ecosystem as they help disperse seeds.

Keystone species are those which have a high impact on an ecosystem relative to its population. Sun bears are a unique keystone species in the tropical forests they inhabit throughout parts of Southeast Asia. They are important to pest control, nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, and more. They are shy and reclusive, and the smallest of all bear species with a head-body length of 100-130cm and weigh between 25-65kg. Their smaller size, large paws with powerful curved claws and specially adapted inward front feet make them excellent swift climbers.

Olive Ridley sea turtles are known for their mass nesting behavior, called arribada (Spanish for arrival by sea), where thousands of females come ashore to lay eggs. After about 45-60 days of incubation, the hatchlings emerge, typically weighing less than 20 grams and measuring around 4-5 cm in length. Despite their small size, only a small fraction survive to adulthood due to numerous threats, including predation and habitat loss. Our co-director took this beautiful shot on a recent trip to Sulawesi.

As their name suggests, woodpeckers are known for pecking trees to forage for insects - but they also use this drilling motion, which creates a drumming sound, to communicate. Woodpeckers have specially evolved to perform these tasks without damaging their brain. They have a padded skull and a hyoid bone which acts as a safety belt that wraps around their skull, and attaches between their eyes protecting their brain from the continuous impact. This is a female banded woodpecker, native to tropical southeastern Asia.

Tarsiers are small, nocturnal primates native to Southeast Asia, known for their large eyes and agility. Despite their tiny size—typically no larger than a teacup—tarsiers are skilled hunters, preying on insects and small vertebrates. Their eyes, which are each about the size of their brain, help them navigate in the dark. Tarsiers are arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, using their long fingers and powerful legs to leap between branches with incredible precision. Spotted by on a trip to Tangkoko National Park in Sulawesi.

There are over 2,400 species of mantises, all of which have similar characteristics: triangular heads, large eyes, elongated slender bodies, and their prominent front legs which are bent and held together as if they are in prayer. They are formidable predators that expertly camouflage with their surroundings and lie in ambush patiently stalking their prey. Their heads are able to turn 180 degrees and they have three small eyes in addition to their compound eyes to perfectly scan their surroundings. They sn**ch their prey with their spiked front legs and lightning-fast reflexes. Dead leaf mantis (pictured) is the common name to dozens of mantis species that mimic dead leaves.
