The whiskered treeswift is the smallest of 4 species in genus Hemiprocne. They are found throughout Southeast Asia. On rainy afternoons we often see them fly over the Danum River in Danum Valley, returning to the same roost after a short flight (like in this video). Filmed using Nikon Australia D850.

Many people have asked us how they can continue to support tourism and conservation in this current climate of limited to zero travel. Normally 15% of proceeds from our book โBorneo: From Trails to Talesโ go to our community-based tourism project, but for today, in honour of ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐น๐ฑ ๐ช๐ถ๐น๐ฑ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐, and for the next 2 weeks, we will be channelling 15% of the proceeds to The Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
Both @BSBCC and our community tourism project rely on visitors as a huge part of revenue. With tourism coming to a halt in Sabah, every penny counts for these organizations to stay afloat. We thank you for your continued support and are looking forward to leading you on a meaningful adventure in the future.
For more information or how to order our beautiful coffee table collectable โBorneo: From Trails to Talesโ and help benefit BSBCC please message us at [email protected] $45 USD or MYR 185 - we can ship internationally!

Goodbye Iman, the last Sumatran Rhino in Malaysia
.
After battling an illness, we lost Iman, Malaysia's last known Sumatran Rhinoceros survivor. We are deeply saddened by this news as it marks that this species is now extinct in this country. It is the first mammal genus to go extinct since the 1930s. Since her rescue in 2014, Iman was given the best care and attention possible. There is still hope yet, as Iman live on as a cell culture in Malaysia and there is a proposed Malaysia-Indonesia collaboration on this species.

Itโs #WorldElephantDay2019! And what better way to showcase how stunning these gentle giants are than with a video by our nature guide @iamdeanjais from Sukau area in Sandakan! This lone Pygmy elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) was spotted going about its daily routine along the riverbank.
To this day, Asian elephants in the wild face a number of threats to their population, including poaching, human-elephant conflict, habitat destruction, and mistreatment in captivity. While many of us do not have the physical capacity to help these stunning mammals, one of the best ways is to raise awareness to protect them from extinction as the Pygmy elephant is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Although Sabah's resident celebrity remains the Orang Utan, today we're pointing the cameras to this "little" guy, the Red Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista Petaurista). Native to Asia, these airborne giants can often be seen nesting in treetops as high as 900 meters. Aside from their obvious membrane of skin between their arms and legs, another prominent feature would be its long tail. It typically hangs down but may be curved over its back should it feel disturbed.

Today's #fridayfeature focuses on the whiskered treeswift, a stunningly beautiful swift found in the lowland forest of Borneo. Thanks for the footage (#๐ท @justin_cally)
One of the reasons why Danum Valley is so special is due to a lack of evidence of permanent human settlement. Whilst we know that the orang sungai (river people) traveled along the Segama River with significant archaeological findings of a burial sites, there is little evidence that people lived in the forest on a permanent basis.
This makes the core area of Danum Valley a truly undisturbed wilderness. An absence of logging coupled with the lack of human presence means the forest is about as pristine as it gets! The trees here are massive with the tallest reaching heights of over 94 meters.

Boasting the best beard in Borneo the Bornean bearded pig (Sus barbatus) has some impressive facial hair. But the beard is more evident on the males which can grow as long as 15 centimetres. Aside from the handsome facial hair, bearded pigs are highly adapted to life on the forest floor digging through the mud in search of shoots and bulbs. They will also follow troops of monkeys as they dislodge fruit from the forest canopy making for an easy meal.
