Iโ€™d never seen a flying rhino before. Then again, Iโ€™d never visited the lowland rainforest of Borneo. This is the main stronghold of the rhinoceros hornbill, one of the largest and most imposing of its bizarre family.

So when a huge black-and-white bird flew out of the forest canopy, I was suitably impressed. I was most struck by its huge and prominent bill, topped with the orange-tinted and uniquely up-curved casque, the horn-like protuberance that gives the species its name.

The rhinoceros hornbill, colloquially known as the rhino, is the only bird in Borneoโ€™s โ€big fiveโ€, along with the pygmy elephant, proboscis monkey, orangutan and estuarine crocodile, all of which we also managed to see.

It was one of no fewer than seven species of hornbill we encountered during our trip to this wildlife-rich island on a visit to the 14th Borneo bird festival, run by the Borneo Bird Club and Sabah Forestry Department.

Many of our most memorable sightings were at the ๐“๐š๐›๐ข๐ง ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž, the largest in Malaysia, covering 300,000 acres (121,000 hectares) in the eastern part of Sabah state. We caught up with elusive mammals such as the leopard cat and Bornean striped palm civet, along with endemic birds such as the jewel-like blue-headed and black-crowned pittas, shy inhabitants of the forest floor.

But even among these star species, the rhinoceros hornbill stood out. After all, itโ€™s not often you come across a flying rhino.

LAHAD DATU: A non-governmental organisation, Borneo Rhino Alliance (Bora), and Responsible Elephant Conservation Trust (Respect) are promoting a new approach to managing human-wild elephant conflicts in Malaysia.

Bora Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr John Payne said the approach includes developing elephant feeding areas at specific sites, away from plantations and gardens, and full with luscious grass and supplementary minerals.

He said the idea is to provide alternative foods for elephants that are as attractive to them as oil palms.

โ€œSeveral grass species, including Napier grass and a native wild grass with the local name of barau, are proving to be the most popular of Malaysiaโ€™s 150 or so grass species for elephants in Sabah.

โ€œWeaning hundreds of elephants off oil palms is an even bigger challenge, but one that can succeed with effort, consistency and patience. We have been developing this approach in ๐“๐š๐›๐ข๐ง ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž since 2021, and the effort is now starting to pay off,โ€ he said in the statement here today.

Dr Payne, who is also a Respect trustee, said wild elephants are visiting the feeding areas several times a year and the mammals love it.

According to him, having demonstrated the concept, the next step will be convincing forestry departments and big landowners, such as those growing oil palm, to allocate small patches of strategically located land to develop more pastures at the forest plantation boundaries.

He emphasised that only small land areas โ€” a few hectares โ€” will be needed at any one pasture site to grow tall, lush grass.

On good soil, he also said, the planted grass produces 80 tonnes of edible grass leaves and stems per hectare per year.

โ€œThank you to our partners, Sabah Wildlife Department and Sabah Forestry Department, The Hornbill Award, CIMB Foundation, KLK, Tradewinds, ๐“๐š๐›๐ข๐ง ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ, and others for believing that this effort is a worthwhile start to a whole new approach to wildlife management,โ€ he added.
