It is spread in an area of 20 acres and is a tropical paradise for different birds' species. This picturesque park is billed as the largest covered bird park all around the globe. Located in the Perdana Botanical Gardens, this park is one of the most peaceful locations in the entire city that entices the nature lovers with green grasslands and landscaped gardens. National Mosque

Masjid Negara is a national legacy, which built between 1963 and 1965. The idea to build a national mosque to memorialize Malaysia’s independence was suggested by the Federal Executive Council a month before independence ceremony. The Chief Ministers of all eleven states in the-then Federation of Malaya brought up a proposal to name the mosque after the country’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj in March 1958 to recognize his contribution to the country’s independence. However, Tunku had declined this honour and suggested that the mosque be named Masjid Negara instead, to symbolize the country’s unity and multi-cultural harmony, as well as a way to give thanks to Allah for the country’s peaceful independence – achieved without a single drop of blood being shed.

History The Mosque’s took about three years for designing, taking inspiration from the mosque in India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Spain. Its most significant features are its 73-metre high minaret, which resembles a folded umbrella, and its 16-point concrete roof’s unique design gives one the impression of standing beneath a gigantic open umbrella.

In the middle of the roof are engravings of Quranic verses on aluminium, inspired by Istanbul’s Blue Mosque. The mosque had undergone major renovations in 1987, replacing the colour of the concrete dome from pink to a more striking green-and-blue (Islamic Tourism Centre of Malaysia).

It is one of the largest mosque in Southeast Asia which can accommodate up to 15,000 people. National Mosque was designed by a group of three architects. The 18-pointed star dome represent the 13 states of Malaysia and five pillars of Islam. The main dome was once pink concrete, underwent a major renovation is now clad with blue and green tiles. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is without a doubt one of Malaysia’s most prominent and treasured heritage buildings and a major historical landmark, with a history that dates back to the late 19th century. Situated opposite Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, the building was inaugurated in 1897 and was named after the reigning sultan of Selangor at the time.

Designed by AC Norman, a notable British architect who was also responsible for the construction of Jamek Mosque and the National Textiles Museum, the Moorish-style architecture of the building incorporated a blend of British and Islamic touch, depicting Malaysia’s cultural diversity and historical legacy.
Constructed using red bricks, the building has three towers that outline its architecture and boasts tall white arches, a grand porch, curved colonnades and two domes that further enrich the visual of the building, as well as a domineering 41.2-m high clock tower that was designed to replicate the Big Ben.

The building was initially used to centralise administrative offices by the British administration, and was known as Government Offices in its early years. It had also once housed Malaysia’s superior courts – the Federal Court of Malaysia, the Court of Appeals and the High Court of Malaya.

The building has stood the test of time and has been a part of many historical events of the country, including the glorious declaration of independence of Malaya on 31 August 1957 and the illustrious lowering of the British Union Jack. It also serves as the backdrop of Malaysia’s annual Independence Day parades, which takes place at Dataran Merdeka, where thousands of Malaysians and foreign tourists would gather to join in the celebration.

Today, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is a popular tourist spot. With its unique design that reflects the historical heritage of Malaysia, it serves as the perfect background for your holiday photos.

Dataran Merdeka / Independence Square

Dataran Merdeka is one of the most important historical landmarks in the history of Malaysia. Dataran means square and Merdeka means independence. The name is self explanatory in that this is the place that marked the independence of Malaysia from colonial rule on 31 August 1957. It is here that the Union Jack was lowered and replaced with the flag of Malaysia.
You will be able to see the 100 metres flag pole which is reputed to be the tallest in the world. On a windy day, you will be able to see the flag of Malaysia being flown in full view at the square.
This flag is the sixth tallest in the world after the ones in North Korea, Turkmenistan, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Brazil.
Effective February 2012, you will be able to see the "Jalur Gemilang" flag raising ceremony every Monday at 10am. This event will take about 10 minutes hence it is better to arrive early so that you will not miss this event. It will be carried out by Kuala Lumpur City Council personnel.
The Square is well maintained with beautiful gardens, terraces, fountains and a big screen for screening of main events and live telecasts. Photography session for first timer to this place is a must whether one is a local or a foreign tourist.
This Square continues to be a venue where many events are held. The National Day celebrations and New Year countdown are among the events that are held here.

National Monument

The National Monument (Tugu Negara) is made in remembrance of the fallen ‘soldiers’ during the fight for freedom to independence in Malaysia. The 15m-high bronze statue is dedicated to the 11,000 people who died during the First World War, the struggle against the Japanese and the Malayan Emergency. Providing excellent views of Parliament House, it was built in 1966 and features the inscription ‘To Our Glorious Dead of the First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945) and the Emergency (1948-1960).

The monument is one of the largest bronze statues in the world, it is 15,5 meters of height, built in 1966 and designed by architect Felix de Weldon (has designed amongst others the famous Iwo Jima monument). The statue represents the general freedom in Malaysia; the national anthem (anthem of freedom) is typically associated with this. The statue consists of 7 soldiers carrying the Malaysian flag. Each of the warriors represents one of the seven qualities of leadership: command, unity, strength, wariness, suffering, courage and sacrifice.

You can also find the monument on the 1RM notes. Upon arrival at this place, you cannot instantly see the bronze soldiers. You first walk across a beautiful wide stairway up the hill, after which you walk through the first part of the monument (here descriptions and other information about the monument itself and the history of the monument can be found). Only after that you find yourself before the fallen soldiers. It looks beautiful.

Petaling Street / Chinatown

Petaling Street is a very popular landmark market place in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. It is known as the local Chinatown and is bustling with various activities that take place throughout the day and night. Since it is mainly a market place, it is constantly bustling with people- locals and tourists alike- as well as shopkeepers and merchants.

Apart from its cultural significance in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Street is also known for the numerous sumptuous food stalls that serve authentic Malaysian dishes like the curry noodles, Asam laksa, barbecued fish (Ikan Bakar) and Hokkien mee. Perhaps the most striking feature of the street found here is the fresh seafood.

Since this area is less prone to floods, the wealthier sector of the population has been able to settle here with businesses, shops and merchandise. In 2003, the market place underwent a major renovation, with improved pavements and streets and well-constructed shops with bright colourful umbrellas attached to them, giving the shops the signature look they bear now.

The entire stretch of the market area is covered with a green awning covering the roof to protect the shop owners and visitors from rain and heat. Petaling Street lights up at night with bright neon lights and the whole place thrives with life, energy, happy shoppers and food lovers throughout the day.

Istana negara

The Istana Negara (English: National Palace) is the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the monarch of Malaysia. It is located along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim (formerly Jalan Duta) near Taman Duta, northwestern Kuala Lumpur. The palace opened in 2011 and replaced the old Istana Negara which was located at a different compound in central Kuala Lumpur.

The palace complex has an area of 97.65 hectares, 22 domes, and is split into three main portions: the Formal Component, Royal Component and Administration Component.

History

The site where the palace is located has been gazetted for such purpose in 1976, and numerous contractors have been involved with the initial planning. The need for a new palace, according to the then-Works Minister Samy Vellu, has been pressing due to space constraints in the old palace. The Balai Rong Seri (throne room) of the old palace was also used as the dining and meeting rooms. The site is 96.52 hectares and situated on a hill, of which according to Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) director-general Dr Amer Hamzah Mohd Yunus, only 28 hectares will be used for the development of the palace complex while the rest is allocated as a forest reserve and a buffer zone for safety purposes.

Construction began in November 2007 and cost RM812 million to build. The complex was headed by the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin of Perlis, serving the mandate trusted upon him by The Malay Rules Council as to overlook the affairs and activities of the palace's construction. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin had also officiated the palace's new official site on 13 November 2006. The complex incorporates Islamic and Malay architectural elements, following designs by architect firm Kumpulan Seni Reka Sdn Bhd and built by construction firm Maya Maju Sdn Bhd. The palace complex was slated for completion in 2009 but was only completed in September 2011.

The royal household began moving its operations to the new palace complex in phases beginning 19 October, ending with a flag-raising ceremony on 15 November.

The 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu was the first King to use the palace while the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah of Kedah was the first King to have his installation ceremony held there.
