Kaipen Snack
Have you read yesterdayโs episode of our short comic? If yes, itโs likely that you knew about this Kaipen snack. But if you have not read it yet, then what are you waiting for? ๐ซต๐ป๐ฅบ
Now letโs recall once more. Kaipen is a Laotian snack made from freshwater algae called โKaiโ that is picked from the river bottom. ๐ฑ๐ฆ Do you remember the process of making it? You can watch the video above to get a clear picture of the Kaipen making process. ๐๐๐ป
๐ฑ During the dry winter months, specifically November to April, the locals will gather to pick up the green algae when the river level is at its lowest.
๐ฑ They will rinse the algae to make sure it is clean from mud or dirt, then packed it into a ball.
๐ฑ After that, the algae will be pressed into thin sheets and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Slices of garlic, tomatoes, and others will be added too on top of it.
๐ฑ Then you can place it outside under the sun to dry for at least 7 hours.
๐ฑ There you go! It is done!
Rather than chips, Lao people preferred to eat Kaipen as their snacks. You must be very aware of seaweed, right? Well, riverweed is a thing too, and they are super famous in Luang Prabang, Laos! ๐ฑ๐ฆ

There is a local legend where they believe Kuang Xi waterfall was formed when a wise old man revealed the waters by digging deep into the Earth! After the waters came out, a beautiful golden deer made its home under a big rock that popped out from the falls. ๐ฆ๐ฟ Such a beautiful legend, just like the waterfalls itself.
๐ You can reach the waterfalls by following along the trail provided. ๐๏ธ๐ถ๐ป For a beautiful place like this, of course there is admission fee to reach there as they want to well-maintain the area. ๐ Look at these graceful girls performing a classical dance. This beautiful art form is one of Lao traditional dances called Nangkeo dance. ๐๐ฝ It is specifically inherited by the Khmu people, an ethnic group in Southeast Asia with the majority living in northern Laos. ๐ฑ๐ฆ
The Nangkeo dance is usually performed together with musical instruments like gong, high hatch, as well as the traditional Khmu music. ๐ถ We commonly know that many traditional dances can be seen in regular events or gatherings at any place, right? In contrast, Nangkeo dance is being reserved for special occasions like rituals and the Greh celebration, which is the Khmu New Year. Also, this dance will be carried out during the opening ceremonial of the new Shaman gathering house, including a special ceremony hosted by the village leader. ๐ค
In the midst of the Greh ceremony, the dance starts after a Laos sword dance has been performed. โ๏ธ The Khmu tribe believes that the sword dance will purify and bless the location specially for the Greh ceremony by summoning the great ancestorโs spirit, Taโ Cwaq/Yaโ Cwaq. Then, as you can see on the dance above, Nangkeo dancers are wearing the traditional Khmu attires and are performed by a group of ladies, but also can be seen together by ladies and gentlemans. The vibe around the Nangkeo dance is truly happening as there are people chanting and clapping hands along with the sound of captivating Khmu music. ๐๐ผ๐๐ฝ๐ถ
๐๐ฝ๐ฑ๐ฆ This beautiful classical dance should be continued by ensuring that the youth learn and involve themselves in it. It is important for them to understand and appreciate their own cultural identity and heritage, as well as to inherit the traditions to keep alive until the next generation. ๐๐ซถ๐ป

If you have read yesterdayโs episode of our short comic, then you must already know about the sticky rice Khao Niaw, one of Laos traditional foods. ๐๐ฑ๐ฆ As you may recall, Laotian often preferred to eat it with non-soupy dishes, and sometimes combine it with other food like Lao sausage.
Did you know that sticky rice can also be made as a snack? Certainly they can, just like a normal rice is made as a Rengginang, a cracker rice originating in Indonesia. Cracker sticky rice is a thing too in Laos, in fact it is a popular street side snack. ๐ฅ Nowadays, there are more varieties of this snack with different toppings like chocolate for sweetness and dried fruits as a hint of savory flavors. ๐ซ๐ฅญ

๐ The wind gently blows the leaves on the trees, birds chirping happily, and the air feels very fresh to breathe in. As you relax admiring the calmness of nature, you suddenly hear a unique sound. ๐ถ Itโs like coming from an instrument, so you try to find the source. There, you found it. What is this instrument that this guy is playing? ๐ค
This is Khaen, the national instrument of Laos. ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฆ It is a free-reed mouth organ consisting rows of bamboo pipes that are mounted in a wooden windchest which air is blown. Khaen is preserved as a symbol of Lao cultural identity throughout the region and worldwide. ๐ฑ๐ฆ This instrument is also adopted by other ethnic groups in Thailand, Cambodia, and closely related to other free-reed mouth organs around Southeast Asia. Not only that, but in 2017, Khaen also was declared as the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. ๐๏ธ
So, when is this Khaen played? ๐ถ Among Lao people, it is traditionally played by musicians duet with solo singers called โmaulamโ in entertainment or in combination with โphinโ, a traditional fretted plucked lute. ๐๏ธ Khaen can also be played as a solo instrument called โdio khaenโ. Whatโs more, Khaen is played along with newer folk instruments accompanying a dance or sing called โwong pong laangโ, where it is played in Northeast Thailand at schools, universities, and even presented internationally. ๐๐ป
๐ถ Khaen is a music of the Lao people and essential to their life, as it promotes family and social cohesion. Families hold a huge responsibility in showing the art of Khaen and delivering the skills to the young people. In maintaining this Lao national instrument, many initiatives have been geared up to preserve it through formal and non-formal education. ๐ง๐ปโ๐ซ๐ฑ๐ฆ

๐ Bamboo is the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. We can spot them in many kinds of environments around the world, mainly in tropical to warm temperate ecosystems. It is useful for many things, namely as a tool, furniture, musical instruments like Khaen, including the one that we all should know, which is being the pandaโs favourite food. ๐ผ
๐ฑ๐ฆ Are you aware that in Laos, specifically in the mountainous northern part, is one of the heavens of bamboo? The mountainous part like Houaphan provinces has a high diversity of bamboo species, which make them strongly involved in development for bamboo. Lots of products are crafted by the bamboos like handcraft, slats and sticks, including utensils. Now, have you heard about a bamboo straw? ๐ง
๐ฑ๐ฆ Among the products that Lao people created from the bamboo is bamboo straw, which is a unique sustainable and reusable straw. How do they make it? Well, it is quite easy!
๐ You cut the bamboo branches with the right thickness and length.
๐ The bamboo straw is sanded to make sure there are no splinters and have a nicer appearance!
๐ Boil the bamboo straw for 10 minutes to disinfect them, then just dry them under the sun and voila, it is done!
๐ Undoubtedly, it is an eco-friendly straw as it is 100% made using natural materials. Whatโs more, they create job opportunities for artisans due to the growing popularity, they are reusable and far better than the single-use plastic straw that badly damages the environment, as well as they are zero waste that could help us avoid pollution in the eco-system.
We should start using the bamboo straw not only to avoid the turtles from eating plastic straw, but also to protect our environment's health and ensure the natural resource to be wisely used! ๐๐ฑ
