Did you know, that as a South African, I always feel right at home the moment I step into Kuala Lumpur...AND I LOVE IT! Living in Southeast Asia, the destinations to visit are endless, however, I personally always make a point of heading to this bustling, colourful, diversified city every few months…

For starters...I can find our beloved Nandos (proudly African), not to mention a curry house on every corner.

Fun Fact: At a time, Durban, South Africa (and my home town) had a higher population of overseas Indians residing here than any other city outside of India itself! If you don’t believe me, Google it!

I’ve got my favourite Airbnb apartment that I book, just a ten-minute walk from Petaling Street and nearby Jalan Alor Night Market (this is the first place I ever tried stingray, which I still feel kinda bad about eating). For me, it’s the ideal location as it’s not RIGHT in the heart of bustling Chinatown, but still close enough.

Plus, I love to walk a lot when I’m visiting a city, it’s one of the best ways of truly getting to know one, and you notice things you never would in a vehicle/motorbike/train.

Of course, I’m a sucker for a bit of shopping and visiting the city’s Little India is one of my must-stops, picking up all my favourite Auyedic products, and delicious sweetmeats along the way. My heart always feels a little warmer after leaving this special area in the city, like I’m carrying a piece of home with me again 💚.

I never leave without hunting down the city’s latest trendy brunch spots (yeah, yeah, I’m not afraid to admit I’m a foodie and this city loves to stay on top of the food presentation game), and that includes all the street art that goes along the way with city-exploring. FYI, KL IS FULL OF IT! (I’m somewhat of a street-art fiend and it’s one of my personal favourite things to photograph when travelling).

And lastly, my trip just ain’t complete without buying at least ten Cadbury Crunchies to take back in my bag with me - don’t believe me, ask my travel companions! As someone usually considered as an island gal, Kuala Lumpur always manages to make me feel like I’m visiting my home away from home, the friendliness and warmth from the people and all!

Although the travel industry has entered some of its darkest times since 2020, let’s not lose hope but continue to have faith that eventually, these will end and we will emerge stronger. From coastal breeze to soothing heat tans, the idea of an island getaway desperately calls me in this time of pandemic. 🌅

In fact, all I want to do is isolate myself on one of the scenic islands in Sabah 🌴, known for their crystal blue seas and sandy beaches and dive into solitude 🌊; literally and figuratively. To see the beautiful coral reefs beneath the surface, and explore the vibrant world of aquatic life. 🐠🏊

Have you ever dived into the waters, and just observe? ✨ the silence and the peacefulness of seeing colourful schools of fish, and 🌈 beautiful corals that decorate the sea bed. In a way, it makes us calm 😌…

Coming back on the shore, to a comfortable room facing this beauty is just the cherry on top to a perfect island getaway 😍. And if you’re in need of a few inspirations on where to go to these places, come take a look at our list! 📅
