Walk with us | Hear our stories | Share our passion

Our walks are unscripted. We invite you to have a conversation about our city. So indulge your curiosity and ask questions about anything that sparks your interest during the walk. Ever

y Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sun morning, one of our tourist guides will take visitors through the streets, lanes, and back alleys of the city and tell them stories about the city’s origins, of how and why people migrated to the city, about past heroes and villains, forgotten pioneers, historic architecture and much more. These tourist guides are eager to share their love for and knowledge of the city. They are passionate about preserving the memory of our city’s heritage and are all avid storytellers who enjoy engaging with their guests. You’ll learn a lot and have fun at the same time. All our guides live and work in the city. A few of us, previously, conducted heritage walks for the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Tourism Selangor. They include the award-winning guide Jane Rai, who has been conducting heritage walks in Kuala Lumpur since 1993. Copyright@2020 Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted

Happy 2024 to everyone at our Facebook.
A resounding thanks to everyone, near and far, for participating in our walking tours (both tip-based and private) since 2020.

Our team of tour guides at Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted want to say this that just making it to January 2024 is an achievement.

The festivals in January and February are exciting times for our tour guides. They get to talk specifically and in-depth about how Malaysians celebrate Chinese New Year and food is eaten on an auspicious day.

Our guides kept the participants engrossed with stories on Chinese culture, traditions, legends, red packets, lion dances, mandarin oranges, auspicious symbols and words, and the meaning of colors that were visibly displayed in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown.

We invited a few participants to experience traditional Chinese food and cultural performances during the much-talked-about KL Prosperity Walk 2023, happening on 5th February.

We are looking forward also to witnessing the Chap Goh Mei celebration; a lineup of performances and dinners hosted by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. We are excited for a merrier Kuala Lumpur!

Looking back on 2022, our tourist guides at Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted had this to say mutually, “What a year has it been for us. There were no dull moments, we had fun engaging with kids especially, and made friends with both local and international, young and old participants. We thank everyone for their generous contribution and support in our passion project about Keeping Kuala Lumpur's Heritage Alive.”

The 31st of December 2022 was no exception. Our guides appreciated every moment they had with the fifty participants who joined the last Chinatown Cultural Walk for the year.

After some chilled fruit punch and a song to mark the year's end with friendly participants, our guides were all set to celebrate in bustling KL's Chinatown.

Thank you 2022! We look to continuous fun and many more friendships in 2023.

When shown a time-tested playground game for children and adults of all age groups to the participants, our tour guides often hear them talk about something they did in the past.

For many adult participants, the Hopscotch reminded them of their childhood days. But these kids wasted no time when shown the spot. Watch them hop on the first empty Hopscotch square.

When was the last time you played Hopscotch? Or never tried it! Join the East-West Connection walk and our fun tour guides can show you how to play.

This morning, we ended our East-West Connection walk in a cheerful mood. To add to the joy, we at Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted treated all the participants to some freshly baked cinnamon cronuts and pizza topped with pesto, cheese, and pine nuts!

Here we are wishing all our friends and family, near and far, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

For many years, the one common remark our tour guides repeatedly hear from our international participants about our city is how diverse, vibrant and friendly it is and the amazing varieties of affordable local food.

Do you see, share and agree with their views?
What say you?

Jane our tour guide enjoys pleasant surprises, always.

Yesterday, one of our stops on the East-West Connection walk was abuzz with the Kuala Lumpur River Jazz Festival ( ).

The Market Street bridge was a spectacular sight. It had a large stage set up overlooking the historic river confluence.

Here, the participants made a longer pause to watch a local jazz band rehearse. The music lifted the participants' mood after being under the intense midday sun. They chatted a bit with the band members and ended up taking photos together.

Like many Malaysians, our tour guides are eager to exercise their duty as Malaysian citizens and cast their vote for the 15th Malaysian general election, tomorrow. Our guides are committed to casting their votes first before they conduct their scheduled walking tours.

Mind you, the international participants who booked their spots months ahead of the election announcement, are thrilled that we are in action, despite the special holiday. They can't wait to hear stories of the city's past and play hopscotch.

Wishing all Malaysians a fun voting day.

It’s been a long time since we posted the news on our walks.

We’ve been working behind the scenes on something special that you don’t want to miss!

We then moved into our new office, at a new location, after having operated in KL’s Chinatown for 17 years.

At the same time, our guides were busy doing private tours on weekdays and the scheduled weekend walks.

In between tour days, they attended seminars, reviewed their notes, sat in group studies, and checked out new dining spots in KL’s Chinatown, something they love doing.

Here are photos we like to share. Hope these photos can change your mood, turn your day around and get you to participate in our walks: Chinatown Cultural Walk & East-West Connection

To our FB followers who wrote to us, we thank you for asking about us.

Look, who came for our heritage walk today?
It's the Canadian family from the popular YouTube Channel, Growing Up Without Borders!

The Pattons are here the second time. We sat down for some chilled mint drink after the 2-hour East-West Connection walk. We chatted on topics involving walking tours and tips on family travel.

The Pattons eagerly shared amazing stories of their trips to nearly 100 countries (Malaysia included). It was inspiring and an eye-opener for us.

While we shared our stories on Malaysia’s cultural diversity and about our young Malaysians, the eloquent and amiable girls shared their views on meeting people of different cultures, and on how they balance homeschooling alongside their travel schedules.

Thank you to Chantal, Tyler, Julia, Angelique, and Chloe for coming to our walk. It was a pleasure to have met you all. Come back again!

Heard of the First of May?

We are not talking about the song by the Bee Gees! We are making reference to Labour Day. The 1st of May is recognized as International Labour or Worker’s Day.

Though an official holiday in Malaysia, our guides at Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted happily celebrated it with curious participants who came for our East-West Connection heritage walk.

The East-West Connection truly connected us with enthusiastic participants from Malaysia, Bulgaria, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, and many more.

It was a fun day for our guides Marie and Stevie, and for Cosmo Hotel who served us complimentary morning coffee, tea, and biscuits. The participants loved the free treat.

Join us someday. The walk is held on every Sunday at Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Meaningful volunteering

Our Free Walk Kuala Lumpur Unscripted guides, Marie and Stevie, took a break today from their usual heritage walks with tourists.

They gave a fresh coat of white paint to the exterior walls of the century-old Sikh temple in KL's Chinatown.

Stevie sponsored the paint and items to remove the dirt off before applying a fresh coat.

We at FWKLU believe volunteering gives us the opportunity to serve our community. It gives us a sense of achievement and self-worth.

So now you can head to the Klang river to catch sight of them before they go elsewhere. They are super strong swimmers!

This morning our excited participants and Stevie, our tourist guide, spotted five of them during the East-West Connection walkabout. Stevie thinks it could be the small-clawed river otters. They appear to move quickly as if hunting for fish.

Can anyone tell us how they got here? We think the recent flood episodes in Kuala Lumpur must have brought them here. What are your thoughts, We love to hear from you!

Good news! The colonial-era building facade will be repaired.

Does this mean a new life is planned for the former Chow Kit & Co? Let us wait and see.

There is something nice about meeting people who hang out at Clubhouse, a social media app. People say… by joining a Clubhouse one can learn new things, make friends, and laugh together, depending on the situation, really?

Last Sunday afternoon, our tour guides had unexpected and interesting chats with followers of , a popular radio chat show in Malaysia, when they came to town for a bit of discovery on the city’s roots.

It was a fitting cause for Naweshad and Shamin, the host of the clubhouse. They invited members to celebrate their first anniversary in open spaces and have face-to-face chats with our storytellers on the city’s heritage.

“People network at Clubhouse, we wanted this time to network at open spaces that are historical” – host Naweshad

Kudos to the lively host and to their creative-minded members who braved the light rain while on the East-West Connection walk. Everyone was absorbed in our stories. They shared their personal thoughts on matters about life, and about our campaign to keep KL’s heritage alive through storytelling. It is a valuable connection and a memorable experience for our guides.

Well isn’t Clubhouse about sharing and storytelling?

Clubhouse encourages people to ‘raise your hand’ to chime in…here the members raised their hands to cross the roads to get to see attractions and the bakery where the walk ended in a party mood!

Thank you # for hosting hot ‘teh tarik’ and chilled lemongrass drink.

Come join our walks when you can.

Our tour guides are proud of our Malaysian and international participants for their continuous support towards our Keeping Kuala Lumpur's Heritage Alive campaign.

Every participant on our tip-based walking tours was mindful of our social distancing requirements, wore masks, and sanitised their hands habitually.

It is pretty obvious, we have all braced ourselves to adapt to living with the Covid-19 pandemic. Our tour guides are confident this situation will continue.

A big thank you, also, to our campaign partners for reminding us to keep safe during our visit to their property.

Stay well. Stay safe.

Mural hunting!
Yes, we did a bit more mural hunting yesterday. This time around Jane our tourist guide showed the participants new murals in the works in vibrant KL’s Chinatown.

They were excited to watch the artist at work and enjoyed the brief chat with Oscar Lee, who patiently shared his inspiration. We admired the mural work. It had a significant amount of small detail.

We have only praises and words of appreciation for this good-humored artist for brightening drab buildings and lanes. Come see it for yourself!

There are lots more murals to come to Chinatown!
Join us on our weekly Chinatown Cultural Walk. We'll tell you fun stories.
