Nigel Wong, MATTA President, in collaboration with Taylor's University to discuss the shifting landscape of global tourism and reveal promising signs of recovery. In early 2024, 790 million international tourists traveled globally, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. Malaysia also showed strong performance, welcoming 18.4 million visitors by September. This surge is largely driven by Millennials and Gen Z, who are prioritising travel, averaging five trips a year, and dedicating a significant portion of their income to experiences.

Nigel highlighted strategies for the industry to capitalise on this trend, such as unbundling services for personalised options, partnering with local providers for exclusive travel packages, and using data analytics to optimise offerings. With evolving traveler preferences, adopting these approaches will be crucial for driving sustainable growth and meeting future demands.

In a recent townhall with 53 Bumiputera members, MATTA discussed the impacts of updated Public Service Expenditure Control Guidelines by the Ministry of Finance, which encourage direct purchases from airlines and hotels, limiting the use of travel agents for government travel needs.

MATTA’s Deputy President, Sheikh Awadh highlighted, “Direct ticket purchases can lead to unpredictable costs, as airlines use dynamic pricing. Travel agents provide crucial services—fare monitoring, itinerary changes, and better rate access—that can offer cost savings and consistency.”

MATTA urges the government to reconsider these guidelines, ensuring a balanced approach that sustains Bumiputera travel agents' critical role in Malaysia's economic ecosystem, in line with Ekonomi Madani and PuTERA 35.

Our Story

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents or more commonly known as MATTA is the largest national travel and tourism association in Malaysia with over 3,600 members comprising local tour and travel agents as well as overseas affiliation.

It was established in 1975 by 30 tour and travel companies to represent them as an unified body. The ambition has since evolved into a respectable national Association representing the entire fabric of the travel and tourism industry.

In the four-decade presence of MATTA, the Association has lent itself as the de facto voice for the industry players. In tandem with the travel practitioners witnessing Malaysia’s tourism growth, MATTA has also expanded in capacity over time to become a mainstay of the industry. This is attributed to the Association’s willingness to share its viewpoints regularly and be a forerunner to champion the cause of its members and the industry.
