Halong Bay, also known as Hạ Long Bay, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular travel destination in Quảng Ninh province, Vietnam. The name Hạ Long means "descending dragon" in Vietnamese.
The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and islets in various shapes and sizes, rising from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. These dramatic rock formations were carved by wind and water erosion over millions of years.
Halong Bay is a center of a larger zone that includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà Island to the southwest. Cát Bà Island is the largest island in the bay and is home to Cát Bà National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
