Medan Pasar is one of Kuala Lumpur's oldest spaces, established centuries ago by settlers who lived along the Klang and Gombak Rivers. The square was vital to Kuala Lumpur's booming trade and commerce of the late 1800s. A wide range of businesses have set up shop at Medan Pasar over the past two hundred years including banks, medicine halls, brothels, opium dens, grocery stores and hotels. Today,

Medan Pasar is still lined with the same three-storey buildings erected in the 1920s by British resident Frank Swettenham but they largely comprise tourism and service industry businesses. Medan Pasar is also known as Old Market Square, Macao Street and Hokkien Street. An art deco clock tower installed in 1937 is the square's signature attraction; look out for it if you're up and about KL city!
