With journals and conferences setting strict limits on page count, it is beneficial for young researchers to know the difference between what's important vs fillers in the Literature Review section of their papers. I don’t know why we call them “soft skills.” They’re certainly not easy to learn, although they are as valuable and necessary as the skills doctors use in surgery, bankers use to assess risk and physicists use to split atoms."

A report from RBC Royal Bank reaffirms what thought leaders keep insisting -- there will be more and more demand for a liberal arts education in our increasingly digital world.

"International students accept their offers in good faith, believing that if they have met the entry criteria, their English must be good enough to allow them to fulfil their academic potential. But the fact is that an IELTS score of 5.5 – or even one a few notches higher – may not be sufficient for them to learn and perform at the true level of their ability. And, for some, that realisation can be devastating."

Overseas students’ academic potential is hobbled if their English does not far exceed current thresholds, says Danijela Trenkic
