Chelliah Toppu is a quaint little spot in the middle of a palm estate famous for their toddy. It is a place I have been wanting to visit for the longest time!
This drink was once so integral to the lives of Malaya’s early Indian migrants, now serves as a nostalgic reminder of the resilience and contributions of the Tamil migrants, who played a vital part in shaping Malaysia’s history.
For the uninitiated, toddy is made from the sap from the cut flowers of a coconut palm. Containers are attached to the stumps to collect the liquid. Initially sweet, the sap soon becomes murky and sour as fermentation occurs, developing a strong, yeast-like aroma that some may find overpowering. The first sip was oh so heavenly 😍
My partner Sanjeev and I decided to try the many interesting meat peratals (South Indian dry curry) served (monitor lizard and wildboar amongst them!). It paired extremely well with the toddy as the cooling effect of the toddy balances the heatiness of the meat peratals.

Needless to say, it was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

It is a blessing when Suzanne and her wonderful family (Husband Robert, daughter Sophie and son Tobias) visit Malaysia and make it a point to catch up with my mum and I over a meal.
After a scrumptious dinner, I decided we should go on a night market adventure to stuff ourselves even more! (Such a Malaysian thing!)
Twas a good evening indeed.
