Oh so lucky guests at Danum this week
And again what an August it's turning out to be
And here is last night's one with UK group, very encouraging that they seem unperturbed by the busiest month of the year for visitors
They said it could never happen but departing Deramakot, Sharon, Jean P and friends, whilst being treated to a mother and infant orangutan on world clouded leopard day this magnificent beast wandered out on the road. Remarkable timing.
The last few weeks has produced a number of Clouded leopard sightings but this is the first during the day for a while.
Our guests were happily observing an Orangutan and this big fella decided that he wanted some attention too.
Thanks for the picture Jean-Philippe Lamothe
watching
On this day now 7 years ago already. Another mega sighting this week, just waiting for the photo. He's a biggie
It's a bit of a CL bonaza this last couple of weeks, another at Sukau Greenview last night as well as this one at Deramkot 💃 two night ago

Outstanding wildlife spotting
Deramakot is all about the wildlife, as the accommodation is just a forestry department facility, and not geared for tourism. So we went there for the animals, and we got them in abundance. At one point we saw 11 orang utans in a 90 minute period, during which time we also watched 21 Elephants grazing on the road less than 100m away. We also sae a reticulated python, Leopard Cats, various civet species, a spotted cat snake, lots of cool frogs, a couple of slow loris, many beautful bird species (our fave's being rhinoceros hornbill and Blythe's Paradise Flycatcher), heaps of insects and butterflies, a moonrat, flying squirrels, colugo, and many other awesome animals. Our spotter Mike was absolutely world class and saw things that we couldn't understand how he spotted. He is the best wildlife spotter we've used anywhere in the world. And Alternative Adventures Borneo put together a really good package for us, right across Sabah, with Deramakot being the highlight. It was also good to see that there is a workable version of sustainable logging. Although the tallest dipterocarps have been removed (meaning the forest is not as impressive as Danum Valley), the biodiversity was outstanding, and the forest was amazing except for the canopy. It's worthwhile making the effort to get to Deramakot if you are after serious wildlife watching.

It maybe busy as heck but the night prowler doesn't stop. V lucky guests with Henry S last night.
What a creature
😡
The Penan village of Long Pakan reported that timber giant Samling's operations resulted in the destruction of a salt lick in their territory. Salt licks are considered to be of High Conservation Value (HCV) and logging companies are mandated to protect them during their operations under Sarawak’s policy of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM).
Which measures will the Malaysian Timber Certification Council take to prevent the destruction of HCV areas in the future in logging operations they certified as sustainable?

Ensure prehensile tail is in position and have a nap, why not
Another wonderful sighting Sbn Hamit

Close to 800 kilos of dried turtle meat and over 500 kilos of sea cucumber - that's what smugglers left behind as they abandoned their boat and fled from Malaysia's maritime authority officers near a coastal village in Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia: https://shorturl.at/FB3l0
this isn't the first such incident in this area. Last September the same agency seized over 3 tonnes of dried turtle, sea horse, shark fins, dried puffer fish and dried giant clams in waters off Kudat: https://shorturl.at/I8eED
In November 2023, Malaysian Police seized 9 tonnes of dried turtle meat there: https://shorturl.at/6tq9P
So if you have a tip off for authorities, please call the Maritime Agency's Kudat Operations Centre at 088-611858
Happy evening for this lucky group and the Marbled Cat chilling.
Oh my goodness, Graham and Louise hit the jackpot last night
Round two of this fantastic initiative by 1 Stop Borneo with the expertise of Pongo and support of the SFD
Whilst it would be wrong to rank rarest or must see species in Borneo some given their disadvantaged status to survive deserve a special mention. Awesome 2 nights ago
Some recent guests with Hamit joined a very elite club last week in seeing Orangutan twins. It is estimated there is approximately a 1 per cent chance of this occurrence and survival rates for both are even lower.
Wonderful gajah time for Hamit and guests
Seems like the Marble Cats have also returned to their business after Hari Raya, another one last night in a different location
Finding Adventure Alternative Borneo while we were organizing our trip to Borneo was the best thing that could’ve happened to us!
Based on what we would like to do during our stay in Sarawak, they proposed us the 4 day 3 night Radak Jungle Camp.
Tom Hewitt and Ayres Amie were always there replying to my emails and helped us with everything that we need before our arrival.
We were already excited about the plan that Ayres showed us via email, but we didn’t expected what we actually lived. 4 days that will be in our hearts forever.
On the first day we met our precious guide Mashor (the most talented, kind and funny guide ever) and Luba (one of the iban that lives in Kampung Tuba) that took us to the Semenggoh Nature Reserve (we were lucky to see 8 orangutans!!) and then straight to Kampung Tuba, an iban village where we spend the rest of the day, the night and the day after (exploring the village, take a boat ride). What can I say about iban people that we meet? I could say a million beautiful words, but I just want to say them thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us. It was unbelievable the kindness, laughs, talks…I still miss you and I always will!
And last but not least, “our Tuba family” took us to Radak Jungle Camp inside the forest and when you think you’ve seen enough beauty, they show us more!! The 3 days we spend in the rainforest with them were amazing. Radak Jungle Camp is unbelievable, you think you are in a sort of an amazing documentary or in a film (and iban people of Kampung Tuba did all by themselves!!!!).
So, thank you!!! Thank you Adventure Alternative Borneo, thank you Tom Hewitt, thank you Ayres Amie, thank you Mashor, thank you Luba, thank you iban people of Kampung Tuba, thank you all. You let us live an experience that we will be in our hearts and memory forever.
I would rate this experience infinite stars!!!
Strike a pose wee Marble Cat, one of four out of the 5 possible cat species lucky guests have seen in the last 3 days

Happiest orangutan ever surely. Organic wild honey, this is sooooo rarely seen. And those bees pack a major punch. It's all about the honey, honey, honey,
After 3 weeks on the road with our UK scout group, it's understandable the leader has gone a bit hat crazy
One of the best shows of the wonderful sun that gives the bear it's name. Taken with a handohone and binoculars
Lucky guests last night had a great viewing of the weird and enigmatic Western Tarsier. Video from Henry S.
