For anyone going to Tanjung Datu National Park over the next few months please note there is significant construction work going on at the park HQ. Upon arrival it can be a bit of shock for visitors to see such devastation and land cleaning within a national park. We are not aware of any official announcement from the park agency about this activity. Apparently, a telecommunication tower is under construction. Visitors should expect some construction noise and less wildlife sightings near the park HQ over the next few months.
Adult male orangutans are occasionally seen near our lodges and camps at Batang Ai. This one was filmed by our guide Paul in late March near Mawang, upriver from Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Dominant male orangutans develop cheek pads or flanges and make calls to intimidate rivals and attract females. This male was spotted near a female and her infant. An adult male’s territory can be up to 15 square miles.
The Sea Stack at Bako has gone, collapsed. Our guide Paul was there just now.

Oriental Pied Hornbill
Whilst Sarawak is known as the ‘Land of the Hornbill’, it is quite difficult to see hornbills in Sarawak. But there are a couple of places worth visiting to see hornbills. Piasau Nature Reserve in Miri is an excellent place to see Oriental Pied hornbills. This 93 hectare urban park is a 10 minute taxi ride from Miri town centre.

Bako National Park: Commonly Seen Animals
Bako National Park is the best place in Sarawak for wildlife watching. Commonly seen animals include proboscis monkeys, silverleaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, colugo (or flying lemur), bearded pigs and snakes, including pit vipers. If you are lucky you should be able to see most of these animals on a day trip to Bako.
