Welcome to Langkawi. In an effort towards making Langkawi a truly eco-destination, we at Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) have started our pursuit to sustainably develop Langkawi as a top eco-tourism and island destination in the world by 2020. And to do this, we have branded all our tourism efforts as Naturally Langkawi. To understand what the brand is anchored in, one would need to understand the attributes of Langkawi. As the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi offers many core value propositions – from its coloured and illustrious history to its vibrant current issues, all of these needs to be understood and addressed before we can elevate Langkawi into the future. A future where Langkawi is already a premium destination where stunning beaches, untouched enclaves, nature sanctuaries, rich traditional cultures as well as warm hospitality unravel the best of island living and be an unforgettable getaway. Natural beauty: Langkawi is an idyllic tropical archipelago of 99 islands located in the Andaman Sea, just north of the Straits of Malacca. Located in Malaysia, this Jewel of Kedah was recognised as the first UNESCO Geopark in South-East Asia since 2007 – giving the world the opportunity to witness beautiful rock formations and study geological wonders dating back more than 500 million years. That is almost as old as the Earth itself! The ancient tropical rainforests hosts unique species of various floras and faunas that had remained hidden to the world until now. An asteroid fell 10 million years ago to create an amazing natural marine-scape known as Mahsuri Rings and also Pulau Tepor - a near ‘perfect crescent’ of the bay. There are mountainous ‘living fossils’ growing with these wonderful stories to tell if we only took the time to listen. In 2016, Langkawi was again awarded the UNESCO Geopark status in recognition of its natural beauty, ecological harmony as well as its archaeological, geological and cultural significance. This recognition and Langkawi’s natural heritage sets Langkawi apart from other tropical islands in the world. Unique experience: Still, Langkawi is more than just an island. The varied history and heritage of the many people living on the islands throughout the ages has made Langkawi into what it is today - a ‘Living Natural Museum’. Paddy-fields are very much a part of the landscape. As is fishing villages – as people are still living off the land and sea. But it is not that backwater of a place. Modern ideas and developments further shape the Langkawi landscape with resorts and townships abound. Connected to the rest of the world via ferries and airplanes, with modern roadways leading all over the island through suburban wooden kampung houses and lush green areas, one can find a perfect balance between ‘nature’ and ‘civilisation’ in this heavenly paradise. Langkawi has diverse experiences to offer. Unlike the Maldives, Seychelles, Phuket or any other islands that are known for one thing, Langkawi offers more than just the beach. While Bali offers both Balinese and ‘party-fun’ culture as the main attraction, in contrast, Langkawi has its ‘nature’ elements. With 500 million year old rainforests, the mangroves and limestone quartz cliffs complemented by its charming, friendly and engaging people with thousands of years of history – it’s truly breathtaking how many things there are to discover, explore and learn in Langkawi. This is a mix that pushes Langkawi beyond the proposition as ‘the island with pristine beaches and inviting seas’. This mix creates a unique island destination with a myriad of diverse yet connected experiences, on an all natural locality. Now isn’t that an experience all of us would love to have?
