The Dusun

The Dusun Berembun Resort Sdn Bhd (1123792-M) A little piece of Paradise tucked in the hills of Negeri Sembilan.

The Dusun is seven self-catering, socially-conscious, eco-bungalows on a durian orchard. In 1984, our family began planting trees on this 12-acre lot. We now have huge trees, 2 forest walks, 6 bungalows, 2 pools, deer, chickens, fish and vegetables when the elements cooperate. The Dusun is designed after our family lifestyle of privacy, long talks, cooking up storms, beautiful views from open-conc

ept houses and watching and listening to nature. It is the perfect place to spend quiet quality time with loved ones or by yourself. There is wifi in a common area sometimes and no TV in any of our bungalows. It is suitable for those looking for an off-grid nature experience. With bungalows on the top of a hill and wind off the forest reserve, we enjoy cooler temperatures at night. Each house has a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor barbecue. We are committed to low-impact resort operations, hiring locally, supporting the community, composting, phosphate-free products, organic farming and air-cond free houses. We continue to nurture and sculpt our little piece of paradise with more forest walks, plants and animals.

We never tire of this view. There is such an incredible variety of trees in a tropical rainforest. Some trees may sometimes flower, others may fruit seasonally. Soon after sunrise, the houses close to Berembun Forest will enjoy the rhythmic calls of a Gibbon clan. In the evening, you may be lucky enough to see a pair of Hornbills flying together over the valley.

We have a little book for those interested in what they might find on your hike here. This book was written especially about the jungle that our guests hike by Denai Bumi and designed and illustrated by Shao-Lyn of Eats, Shoots & Roots . We used to give it to guests but found a few crumpled in corners, so now we charge a nominal fee to those who are interested.

The Dusun is a collection of jungle lodges nestled in lush greenery and overlooking stunning views of a Malaysian rainforest.

There are seven private houses on the Dusun. Each is unique and set to catch the views and the wind while maintaining privacy for guests. Some face a virgin Malaysian rainforest, while others look out onto distant rolling hills.

We offer bungalows with kitchens and decks, not rooms like hotels do. Hotels are big on services, and cater to large amounts of people - we are never crowded and our guests trade services for privacy.

The Dusun experience is a little different. We are eco-friendly and enjoy open-concept houses, so we have no air-conditioning. But the air is fresh and moist.

These Malaysian accommodations are just a little over an hour away from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

In 1984, The Dusun was just a little hill with rubber trees and no water source or electricity.

Helen and David, alongside local villagers armed with helpful knowledge and skills, embarked on a journey of transformation. Their weekends were spent tirelessly digging, planting, watering, and fertilizing, punctuated by lunches by the serene riverbank. Despite juggling full-time jobs during the week, they dedicated their labor and love. The result? A sprawling 12-acre oasis they affectionately referred to as The Dusun or the orchard.

In the 80s, Helen, David, and the family had a crooked little fireplace where they cooked and enjoyed some warmth. In those days, it was cold and windy at night, and food would be brought up the hill in a cold box, and ‘showers’ meant scooping cold water out of a large earthenware urn.

We finally had electricity in the mid-2000s when there was a small wedding at The Dusun, and the priority was suddenly fairy lights in the trees.

The ethos of The Dusun has always been rooted in nature's embrace, fostering moments of shared sunset watching, communal feasts, leisurely strolls appreciating the surrounding ecosystem, and endless conversations over books.

In 2009, recognizing others' yearning for The Dusun experience, we opened our doors to the public; a testament to sharing our slice of paradise with the world.

We love this saying -"Disconnect to reconnect." Whether we're going completely off-grid or simply on a getaway from the city, we embrace the power of disconnecting to tap into our creative flow.

Nestled in the serenity of nature, creative projects like painting, writing, or crafting can light a spark that makes us all glitter with joy.

Explore the vibrant heart of Seremban.

The bustling wet market, where fresh flavours and community connections can be found:
The wet market is a must-visit for those who do not live in Malaysia. Especially early in the morning, the market represents the very pulse of this small city, Seremban, and a real encounter with Malaysia’s colourful, odiferous and loud personality. Most stalls are run by independent grocers/growers, and the produce is as fresh as it gets.

Do bring your own shopping bags or buy a tote bag from us, or you will get plastic bags within plastic bags for every item. There is also a food court upstairs that has a wide variety of authentic local food, including the famous Seremban Beef Noodles; and don’t forget to visit the Cendol (crushed ice dessert) stall in the parking lot.

We have solar panels installed on the roof of Tapir House. The electricity is channeled back to TNB. When we installed them, there was professional advice that the batteries to store this energy were still unstable and sometimes dangerous. For example in Australia, these batteries require a thick cement casing in case they leak of explode. So we gave the batteries a miss and decided to channel our clean energy to TNB. This energy accounts for about a third of our energy consumption.

Here at The Dusun, we have two vegetable gardens: one above Tapir House and the other in front of Tembusu House.

The vegetable gardens are planned, planted and cared for by the founder, Helen and her team. Helen spent a year on organic farms in New Zealand and brought that knowledge back to her home, The Dusun. She has nurtured The Dusun based on Permaculture principles, where the land is seen as an ecosystem that can be self-sufficient and sustainable.

Now over 80- years old, Helen sometimes takes breaks from the garden, so our vegetables are seasonal according to the rhythms of our resident farmer.

We also have herbs like lemongrass, ulam raja, rosemary, basil and more for cooking. Just ask our staff to show you where these herbs are, and they can assist you with harvesting them in a sustainable way.

Many years ago, charming and historical craftsmanship like this was easy to find in junkyards close to Seremban. As wooden houses were being replaced by brick structures, these remnants of kampung houses were thrown out. We managed to salvage some for our buildings. In these pictures are Emas House.

Helen and David studied kampung house architecture for how they let light in, and how wind is guided through the house for coolness. The only difference is most houses showed carving to the outside, but Helen faces carvings inside so they can be admired by the occupants of the house.

The community here at The Dusun is literally our local community. Most of our team members are from surrounding villages, and many of them are related to each other within large extended families.

The two closest villages to us are home to Temuan people, an Indigeous of Malaysia. There are two Temuan villages close to us and most of our staff are from this community. The Orang Asli’s knowledge of the jungle is unparalleled. For generations, the rainforest was a source of food and medicine in this culture and many families still own small farms inside and by the jungle. But many also enjoy the stability of wages as Seremban, and its surroundings get busier.

The Temuan speak their own language and are traditionally animists. Their sacred graveyards are hidden deep in the rainforest. The Temuan treat the jungle with great respect; believing that each river, tree, shrub and rock has a guardian spirit. Much of Temuan life was guided by taboos, herbal remedies, rituals and a bit of magic. Although, these days, many Orang Asli have converted to Islam or other religions.

Mindfulness is a bit of a mystery, but it's a refreshing practice when you have some time and are in nature.

You can try this anywhere. Start by counting your breath. One for inhale, two for exhale. It's normal to have thoughts come, that's what the brain does - let the thought pass without judging yourself.

Take note of what you can hear around you. The jungle can be surprisingly loud, especially at night. Then notice what you feel on your skin, and where your body meets the chair or floor.

Do this for as long or short as you like, just practice. Like the magpie robin flitting from branch to branch, as your mind wanders, you can just land on counting breaths or noticing your surroundings.

The Patio is where we offer breakfast for our guests, group meals, drinks for sale, and free Wi-Fi. Guests can also order breakfast, lunch, or dinner from The Patio and the food will be delivered straight to the house you are staying in.

Besides this, we also provide barbecue services where we bring the barbecue equipment to the guests' rooms, allowing them to grill their own food.

Just don't forget, because we are small (just 7 houses), food needs to be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

All food provided is made of locally sourced ingredients either from our own gardens or from the local farmers' markets.

Kantan House is split into two small buildings with a cozy deck nestled under the shade of an avocado tree. This house got its name from a towering Kantan tree that reaches up to the living room, lining your view of the rainforest.

The main house has a large living room, kitchen and an airy bathroom with a sunken bathtub, and the other building has two bedrooms along with an attached bathroom.

From Kantan house's deck, you can enjoy the view of the sunrise and sometimes the moonrise.

Walks in The Dusun:

- Petai Forest Walk
Sitting on the edge of the estate is a Petai forest. Surrounded by towering petai trees is a pathway we hand crafted to allow guests to explore this beautiful forest. You can spot petai, also known as 'stinky bean' -a common delight enjoyed amongst many South East Asians; and other fruit trees.

- Mahogany Forest Walk
Just below Berembun House is an acre of magnificent Mahogany trees. A path now winds its way through it, one path, taking you to one of the nearby rivers in the area.

Have you heard of Forest Bathing?
Forest bathing, also known as Shinrin-yoku in Japanese, is a practice that involves immersing oneself in nature, particularly forests, for the purpose of enhancing mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, forest bathing has gained popularity worldwide as a form of nature therapy.

Forest bathing emphasizes on slowing down and fully engaging with the natural environment. Participants are encouraged to use all their senses to connect with the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and even tastes of the forest. The practice often involves mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and gentle movement exercises. These activities aim to induce a state of relaxation, reduce stress levels, and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

Numerous studies have highlighted the health benefits associated with forest bathing. These benefits may include reduced blood pressure, lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone), improved mood, enhanced immune function, increased energy levels, and improved sleep quality.

Overall, forest bathing offers a holistic approach to well-being by encouraging individuals to slow down, reconnect with nature, and reap the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of spending time in natural environments.

Come forest bathe at The Dusun. Book directly on our website for the best rates.
