If you’re passionate about solving waste issues on a very local scale, entrepreneurialism and riverine conservation then this project is perfect for you! The community group at Lembah Subang is already established and has two very amazing champion leaders and up to 10 other members who join in! This project is already making a big difference, we want to add the cherry on top so we are ready to expand.

The Role
Upcycled by Fuze Ecoteer, a project under the pioneering social enterprise Fuze Ecoteer, is dedicated to increase recycling rates in PPR Lembah Subang, located on the banks of Kayu Ara River. Our aim is to develop environmental stewardship within the communities of PPR Lembah Subang through precious plastic business models. As such, Upcycled by FE is seeking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join us as the Project Leader. This is an exceptional opportunity to take the lead in an impactful project with an established community group already working with our precious plastic machines.

As the project leader, you will be responsible for the day to day admin and operations of upcycled alongside our community champions. We are now looking to go to the next level. This is perfect for people with a passion to fight for the plastic problem and who are detailed and process orientated, so our impact can be scaled.

Why Are We Fundraising?
The money raised will go towards the development of our Upcycled by FE community recycling project at PPR Lembah Subang, with the long term goal of fostering environmental stewardship of Kayu Ara River.

Goal 1 – To upscale the size of our production centre, increasing our capacity to collect and store recyclables from the community.
Goal 2 – To purchase machinery so we can repurpose higher volumes of recyclable plastic waste into furniture and construction materials.

Goal 3 – To purchase shredding machines that can process larger volumes of plastic waste.

The words preservation and conservation are often used interchangeably. But really they are two distinct approaches to managing and protecting natural resources, ecosystems, and cultural heritage.

It’s not that one is better over the other. But it certainly depends on context.

In a little-known corner of the Royal Belum State Park in northern Perak, members of the Jahai Orang Asli are at the forefront of a community-led ecotourism initiative. The Sungai Tiang "Akekchep" or "do not capture" is a stretch of untouched river in pristine primary rainforest, and the locals are diligently balancing between keeping it that way whilst still opening up their backyard for small groups of visitors appreciate its natural beauty.

Under the self-regulated aquatic management plan, the community enforces specific rules on fishing, all aimed to keep a healthy fish population for generations to come. The benefits of preserving aquatic species will no doubt have positive impacts on the balance of the ecosystem as a whole.

It's heartwarming to hear about communities being involved in ecotourism. This sustainable approach not only helps protect the pristine rainforest of Royal Belum, but also provides economic opportunities for the local community. Supporting initiatives like this can have a positive impact on both conservation efforts and the livelihoods of indigenous peoples.

We got you covered. Upcycled by Fuze Ecoteer have been actively organising vital river cleanups along a stretch of Sungai Kayu Ara. Together with the residents from PPR Lembah Subang, we're slowly but surely rehabilitating this riverway and its banks.

Collaborate with us for more than cleanups! We also run workshops, talks, and we're always interested in partnership opportunities.

Three long and fruitful months of field data collection for Daniel Quilter's PhD research, across two awe-inspiring islands, Redang and Perhentian.

Not much is known about the movements of nesting sea turtles within the +-10 days after they nest and before they come ashore again to nest, called the inter-nesting period. Studies in other parts of the world have shown they are less active or semi-hibernate, whereas in other areas they will feed on seagrass between nests. But how are their movements influenced by increased human activity like boat traffic around these touristic islands?

Through the deployment of acoustic transmitters on backpacks, and the corresponding use of hydrophone receivers, location data was collected to know the daily movements of the inter-nesting mothers in relation to boat activities.

Much appreciation goes out to the field assistants , and for their hard work, Perhentian Turtle Project for their dedication and organisational support, Abang Mann and the Chagar Hutang team, Nijee from DoF Perhentian and of course fellow researchers and support from SeaTRU, UMT Sea Turtle Research Unit - UMTand a big thank you to Yayasan Sime Darby for funding the project.

We're glad that the fieldwork was a success, but now is time for the real work of making sense of the data (as with all scientific endeavours). All the best Dan!
