As we stroll along here, you will be meet by an "open museum". Al-Balad is reestablishing itself as a center of culture. New art spaces are opening, including the beautifully restored Bait Sharbatly, currently exhibiting calligraphy by the late Mohammad Salem Bajnaid. The show is curated by the artist’s grandson, who has also opened a coffee shop, Medd Café, on the roof. In a narrow lane filled with bougainvillea and friendly street cats is Ayat Studio, a tiny workshop where Ayat Dhahi, a young Saudi woman who studied jewellery design in Savannah, Georgia, teaches visitors how to make their own accessories. Come with us to explore one of the earliest Muslim cities in the world.
