Building exclusive luxury in an African wilderness
The Machangulo Private Nature Reserve has been an amazing project to help the local community at a remote wilderness location and to protect the pristine wildlife, especially the turtle nesting beach that falls within the Ponta do Ouro marine reserve. Building a few homes overlooking the Indian Ocean in such a remote location was challenging but was essential to fuel the economic uplift and environmental protection that Machangulo so badly needed. Vista Abril was completed in 2014 and unusually faces Northwards over a naturally protected bay by the excellent secret surfing location of Ponta Abril. The two buildings have a contemporary design finished with natural textures. The main building has spectacular views throughout, includes two en-suite bedrooms, the kitchen and a lounge and dining area. The pool deck across the front of the building is the perfect place to take advantage of the amazing wind protection that the property enjoys. A walkway leading down towards the turtle nesting beach reveals a hidden beach-side pavilion nestled in the dune forest, complete with a terrace for lunches by the bay. Two bedrooms in the beach pavilion are perfect for sleeping to the sound of the ocean. Low tide reveals a 60 meter long tidal pool towards the point that is ideal for calm water swimming, snorkelling and for children to paddle. For keen surfers, Ponta Abril offers a right hand reef break with consistent swell. Kite surfing is also excellent.
The beautiful Machangulo peninsula is an unspoiled African wilderness situated in the Southern most part of Mozambique adjacent to Inhaca Island in the Bay of Maputo. It has a land area of thousands of hectares and has over 20 kilometers of cinnamon colored sand beaches on the warm Indian Ocean. Within the peninsula are twelve substantial lakes and a vast territory of natural indigenous bush. The coastline falls within a marine reserve protecting endangered turtles and is flanked by the calmness of the bay on the Western side, the wildness of the Indian Ocean on the East and a major safari game reserve to the South. Access from Maputo is typically by charter boat across Maputo bay. Alternatively a helicopter hop or small fixed wing aircraft can be chartered. The estate’s private and exclusive landing strip is just 20 minutes flight from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.
