The last two weeks have felt like the cyclone hitting all over again but this time thousands are fleeing insurgent attacks and occupations. Despite continually hounding UN agencies in Pemba, and Mozambique, no one has come to help. Guludo may have gone but Nema Foundation continues and remains the last hope for the families walking without food for days to safety.
Our tiny Nema team (with the help of Nema secondary scholars) has been helping the most vulnerable families with food and yesterday alone managed to help 80 of the most vulnerable families leave the district of Macomia to go and stay with family in safer areas. The courage and commitment of the Nema team continues to blow my mind. They are heroes 2020 so desperately needs.
Of all the tragic stories emerging from Mucojo, this one stands out. After walking for days to escape the violence, this father was reunited with his children, but only to find out their mother was one of the 300 people abducted by the rebels 10 days ago in Pangane. This is one of the many families the Nema team has been supporting with emergency food and transport to extended family in safer zones. In the coming weeks the team will go and visit them and provide more support.
We want to thank everyone who has helped and supported Nema to enable the team to be there for so many families traumatised by this conflict. Nema remains to be the only organisation helping the thousands fleeing Mucojo in Macomia and showing that people near and far do care.
