A photographic record of the exact moment a female seahorse transfers her eggs to the male’s brood pouch, which will fertilize and protect them until the young are born.

Seahorses are known for some of their unique characteristics in the animal kingdom. Some species establish monogamous bonds during the breeding season, reinforced by behaviors such as daily courtship dances. These dances, which can last several minutes, help to synchronize the pair for reproduction. During courtship, seahorses can change color, a form of visual communication between mates.

Their diet consists mainly of small crustaceans, such as shrimp and other aquatic organisms. Although they are voracious predators and consume large quantities of food, the exact number of prey ingested varies according to size and species.

One of their most notable characteristics is the male’s role in reproduction: he is the one who carries the fertilized eggs in a special pouch until they are ready to hatch. This process makes seahorses one of the few examples of such active paternal care in the animal world.

Dugong Tracking Using Radio Telemetry in Bazaruto

The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park is home to the last viable population of dugongs on the East African coast. The first Dugong Tagging project in Africa was recently implemented in Bazaruto, led by the PNAB team in partnership with the technical team from James Cook University in Australia.

Dugongs equipped with collars with GPS/VHF transmitters can be tracked remotely using coordinates provided by the GPS on the device. However, this process can also be done using VHF radio, which is the most common method for tracking animals in the wild.

Each dugong tag is pre-programmed with a unique frequency, functioning like separate stations on a domestic radio, allowing each animal to be located individually using a receiver that needs to be connected to an antenna to capture the VHF signal emitted by the transmitter. The signal reaches the receiver in the form of beeps, indicating the presence of the monitored Dugong nearby, with a range that varies from a few meters to 15km.
